MS Assault on Apache / Linux Could Be Good
MS may worry about Apache and Linux for servers,
but MS has a lock on the desktop with Office.
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint have unfortunately
become de facto standards in industry. I personally
reject such proprietary formats if they are sent to
me, but they are, all too often. The MS monopoly
is not the OS but Word.
However, if MS really pushes people to send URLs
of HTML docs on their personal web servers, in
order to conquer Apache/Linux, they could very
well defeat their own Office monopoly. I would
love a world in which people understood it was
better to ship URLs pointing to some standard format
rather than ship around Word docs. And it would
break MS's real monopoly if people did that. Unfortunately,
I doubt people will . And if they don't, Apache will
survive, and so will the MS Office monopoly. Sigh.
