It can search the files for regular expressions or literal expressions. Users can choose the fonts used to display files.
an immense number of details are embodied in auto*
An immense number of details are now embodied in
the autoconf/automake/libtool system. No doubt
when these tools where fist coded, the programmer
coded for what would be "common sense". Then the
idiosyncrasies of the target systems came along
and caused bugs. Each bug is a patch in the long
history of one of the tools. To replace these
tools the history of autoconf/automake/libtool
must be understood in detail or repeated. (Those
who forget history are condemed to repeat it.)
Noone wants to do it, when there are more fun
things to do. Most of the tools suggested as
replacements do not have as wide usage as the
auto* tools. If they did have such a wide usage,
they would begin to have the long bugfix
history. In short the auto* tools are complex
because they help manage an immense amount of
complexity! They are definately easier to use
than to manage that complexity by hand or to
rewrite the auto* tools! It is unlikely that
anyone will want to rewrite those tools now.

But who will bell the cat?
