LFT (Layer Four Traceroute) is a sort of "traceroute" that often works much faster than the commonly-used Van Jacobson method and goes through many configurations of packet-filter based firewalls. More importantly, LFT implements numerous other features, including TCP, UDP, or ICMP-based traces, AS number lookups through several reliable sources, loose source routing, netblock name lookups, and more. LFT also distinguishes between layer-4 protocols, which make its statistics slightly more realistic, and gives a savvy user the ability to trace protocol routes, not just layer-3 hops.
The Prefix WhoIs Project provides a whois-compatible client and server framework for disclosing various up-to-date routing information via a familiar whois interface. Instead of using registrar-originated information (which is often unspecific or inaccurate), it uses the Internet's global routing table as gleaned from a number of routing peers around the network. The software consists of a 'pWhoIsd' server that responds to queries using a variety of output formats including pWhoIs-native, Cymru, and RPSL, the 'pWhoIs-updatedb' agent that parses routing information bases (RIBs) from Internet routers and populates a relational database, and the 'WhoB' command-line whois client.
Path Analyzer Pro integrates advanced traceroute software (based on the open-source tool LFT) with performance measurements, DNS, whois, and specialized network resolution to help investigate network issues. It also supports geolocation, and can plot network paths on a map. People use it to research IP addresses, email addresses, and network paths, to graph protocol latency, jitter, and other factors, and to locate firewalls and other filters that may be impacting your connections.
WhoIs Analyzer Pro is a smart whois client for Mac OS X and Windows that grants you access to contact records and other information from all Internet registrars and routing registries worldwide without you having to identify the country, registry, or other information. You can use WAPro to find information on IP addresses, URLs, domains, and Autonymous System Numbers. WAPro's unique features allow it to identify which server to ask for the most appropriate information, and to follow referrals in order to find more specific information automatically.
