As a developer I probably don't know or care too much about this to change my applications, at least not until everyone else uses it. However, the brave souls that package applications for this and that system and distribution maintainers might be interested in actually providing the proposed command line options. It wouldn't be that hard to write wrappers (native executables or shell scripts) that provided the required options and translated them to whatever the application uses.
