Dependency on ASP
I am not familiar with the ASP system but I have been paying attention to every bit of relevant information about it and your editorial was really needed to better evaluate the advantages promoted by service providers and echoed, in general, by the press.
It seems ASPs rent "standard" general applications like Exchange or more specific applications oriented for a specific organisation area or problem.
Particularly in this last case, it seems to me there is an additional problem with an ASP solution: the need to evolve an application to get a par with the company's evolution (eg, need to answer market changes) is conditioned by another company's capability/willingness/costs to deliver it, putting at risking competitive advantages.
Sometimes it's difficult to have it's own IT departement ensure local application evolution. I imagine it could be more problematic with an ASP solution.
Also, I see another problem with ASPs (similar to outsorcing) that organisations tend to ignore: applications represent company's know how (the more specific, the more know how it represents). Having an application mantained and controled outside means losing control.
Are those concerns just FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt)?
