Fun learning MySQL
I recently took a course in schhol in DB's, which was (plz: no laughs...) using M$ Access. I asked my instructor if I could use something else, and he said it would be okay as long as that 'somethig else' was good. So now I had a bg question before me. What is 'good'? A lot of questions and a lot more internet searches later I thought MySQL could be something worth a try.
I used it to prepare a DB of all the songs that I had on my computer :-) it was fun and easy to learn. Moreover, thanks to a friend of mine I used PHP to have a nice lil browser-based interface. The server has been running for about 10 days with no problems so far, and I get to listen to my own 'streaming media' anywhere (minus the irritating popup ads).
For a beginer, I think three things are necessary:
a. Ease of install
b. Detailed documentation
c. Online support (forums, etc.)
I dont know if Postgres, etc. have these criteria met, but I did find mysql quite useful. At the end of the day I was not only able to learn something new and useful, but I had fun learning it.
Now I think I could swim into some 'serious waters'....
