Sphere is a RPGCE (a role-playing game (RPG) creation engine) that allows you to relatively easily put together an RPG along the lines of Final Fantasy 6 or Phantasy Star. It supports 32-bit graphics (with 256 levels of translucency) and MP3, Ogg, MOD, S3M, IT, and XM files for audio (and WAV and SPX (speex) for sound effects), and does not place arbitrary limits on map, tile set, sprite set, or script sizes.
Phpcron is a PHP command line program, which allows you to execute programs and system commands at certain scheduled times. It operates in a similar fashion to Unix's Crond daemon, and can be used in place of, or as a complement to crond. It allows a host of options, including logging, and email features. The Phpcron package includes Phpcron Admin, which provides a browser based interface to Phpcron, allowing a user to remotely schedule programs and change Phpcron options, without having to deal with SSH, telnet, or arcane text editors.
EvoChess is a scientific experiment that uses Internet-connected computers in the evolution of chess playing programs. You can participate by running qoopy, an environment for distributed computing as done by EvoChess. The users can start their own evolution to develop a variety of chess programs. The better ones will survive and produce offspring, who inherit their successful behavior encoded in their genotype. To run it, Java 1.3 must be installed.
Astro Battle is an online multiplayer space simulation game where players can design and pilot their space ships against each other. The spaceships are made up of modules. Modules are components that contribute some ability or property to the spaceship as a whole. Some examples of modules are bridges, thrusters, cannons, torpedo bays, reactors, and batteries. A Player can join an arena by challenging another player to a space duel or by joining a dedicated server (which can host several players at a time). Astro Battle also has a practice arena for testing ship designs offline.
SDLucid is a C++ wrapper library for the SDL media library. It aims to not only be a wrapper, but to also offer a cleaner interface than the original SDL, as well as increased functionality. This additional functionality includes fonts, PNG loading, graphical primitives, built-in mixing, mod playing, and MP3 decoding. SDLucid follows naming conventions, approximating those of the Standard Template Library.
C Scripting Language (CSL) is an embeddable scripting language with C syntax. A comprehensive set of libraries is included in the base package, and writing your own libraries is possible with an easy API for C programs, as well as a class interface for C++ programs. If you are looking for a compact and powerful scripting engine for your application, CSL might be the choice.
The Generic Software Wrappers Toolkit allows you to wrap closed-source applications to constrain or transform their behavior. Wrappers are written that intercept system calls and other system events, and allow you to deny, transform, log, or augment the system events. They are written in a custom language that abstracts away many of the gritty issues, allowing the wrapper author to concentrate on policy. Sample wrappers include dbfencrypt, which provides transparent access to "encrypted" files; controlledx, which limits the programs a process can execute; and id-seq, a trainable sequence-based intrusion detection wrapper.
