Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver, maintained for more than 30 years. It saves many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore individual files from the archive. It includes command line interfaces for the "tar", "Sun-Tar", "cpio", "pax", and "gnutar" command-line syntax. It includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern matcher, multi-volume support, the ability to archive sparse files and ACLs, the ability to archive extended file flags, automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order recognition, automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives, and special features that allow star to be used for full and incremental backups. It includes the only known platform independent "rmt" server program.

rsync is a replacement for rcp (and scp) that has many more features. It uses the "rsync algorithm" which provides a very fast method for remote files into sync. It does this by sending just the differences in the files across the link, without requiring that both sets of files are present at one of the ends of the link beforehand.

It is configured with configuration files, and the backup is started from the command line. It has been tested for over 10 years. ns4 is a command line configuration management tool that runs on a Unix or Windows based operating system. It allows the automated backup of node (i.e. routers and switches) configurations to an FTP/SFTP server or local media on a daily basis to create configuration archives. It can run ad-hoc commands on multiple nodes as well as custom scripts for automating complex tasks. It uses Perl and allows you to manipulate the output of commands using regular expressions within scripts. Configuration based cartridges are used to specify new node types, allowing the user to extend its functionality in a simple and dynamic way.

Unison is a file-synchronization tool for Unix and Windows. It allows two copies of a collection of files and directories to be stored on different hosts (or different disks on the same host), modified separately, and then brought up to date by propagating the changes in each replica to the other. Unison can deal with updates to both replicas of a distributed directory structure. Updates that do not conflict are propagated automatically. Conflicting updates are detected and displayed. Unison can communicate through a direct socket link or through an rsh/ssh tunnel. It uses network bandwidth efficiently.

It is a very general, highly configurable, two-part software system that captures and analyzes logged performance data from IP-networked equipment and reports it via email and Web pages.
