Dar is a shell command that makes backup of a directory tree and files. Its features include splitting archives over several files, DVD, CD, ZIP, or floppies, compression, full or differential backups, strong encryption, proper saving and restoration of hard links, extended attributes, file forks, Door inodes, and sparse files, remote backup using pipes and external commands (such as ssh), and rearrangement of the "slices" of an existing archive. It can run commands between slices, before and after saving some defined files or directories (for a proper database backup, for example), and quickly retrieve individual files from differential and full backups. Several external GUIs exist as alternatives to its CLI interface, like kdar, DarGUI, SaraB, etc.
Cfengine is a tool for setting up and maintaining BSD and System-5-like operating system optionally attached to a TCP/IP network. You can think of cfengine as a very high level language, much higher level than Perl or shell: a single statement can result in many hundreds of operations being performed on multiple hosts. Cfengine is good at performing a lot of common system administration tasks, and allows you to build on its strengths with your own scripts.
MIB Smithy SDK is a dynamic extension to Tcl/Tk (8.4+) that allows development of custom scripts for controlling SNMP agents, manipulating SMI definitions, doing conversions, and more. It is based on the core of Muonics' MIB Smithy, and the SDK supports SMIv1 and SMIv2, as well as SNMPv1/v2c/v3 with HMAC-SHA-96 and HMAC-MD5-96 authentication and DES/CBC and AES128/CFB privacy. It also provides complete read-write access to all elements of SMI/MIB Module definitions, unlike similar extensions that provide only read access to a limited subset. The SDK allows multiple discrete SMI databases and SNMP sessions, and provides all of the built-in validation and error recovery capabilites of the full product, without the visual MIB development environment.
sdparm has a command line interface for getting and setting SCSI mode page fields. Fields can be referred to by an acronym or a numerical address. It has support for various SCSI transport and vendor-specific mode pages. It also decodes Vital Product Data (VPD) pages and can send some simple SCSI commands. sdparm was originally written for Linux with ports to FreeBSD, Solaris, Tru64, and Windows.
MIB Views is an entry-level SNMP management application providing an easy to use tabbed interface with several SNMP tools. The tools are based partly on those bundled in MIB Smithy, with a more consolidated GUI and new features. The suite includes MIB Browser (Tree View), SNMP Query, Table View, SNMP Walk, and Trap Watch tools, with more tools and plugin features in the works. MIB Views supports SNMPv1, SNMPv2c, and SNMPv3, with MD5 and SHA authentication and DES encryption.
The Shrew Soft VPN Client for Unix is a free IPsec Client for FreeBSD, NetBSD, and Linux based operating systems. It can be used to communicate with systems running ipsec-tools. The Unix client utilizes the IPsec kernel support included with the operating system, and comes with the complete Internet Key Exchange daemon and client front end application source code. A Windows version is also available.
smartmontools contains utilities that control and monitor storage devices using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) system built into ATA and SCSI hard drives. This is used to check the reliability of the hard drive and to predict drive failures. Version 5.x is designed to comply with the ATA/ATAPI-5 specification. Future releases will comply with the ATA/ATAPI-6 and ATA/ATAPI-7 specifications. It is meant to be an up-to-date replacement for the ucsc-smartsuite and smartsuite packages, and is derived from that code.
WebJob downloads a program over HTTP/HTTPS and executes it in one unified operation. The output, if any, may be directed to stdout/stderr or a WebJob server. WebJob may be useful in incident response and intrusion analysis as it provides a mechanism to run known good diagnostic programs on a potentially compromised system. WebJob also provides a framework that is conducive to centralized management. Therefore, it can support and help automate a large number of common administrative tasks and host-based monitoring scenarios.
