Cfengine is a tool for setting up and maintaining BSD and System-5-like operating system optionally attached to a TCP/IP network. You can think of cfengine as a very high level language, much higher level than Perl or shell: a single statement can result in many hundreds of operations being performed on multiple hosts. Cfengine is good at performing a lot of common system administration tasks, and allows you to build on its strengths with your own scripts.
CTL is a cross-platform control dispatching tool that makes it easy to automate any kind of distributed systems management or application provisioning task. Rather than writing complex and error-prone scripts that over utilize "for loops", CTL handles the network dispatching for you and allows you to focus on the actual management tasks you need to accomplish. In addition to being a dispatching tool, CTL comes with pre-built cross-platform utilities so you don't have to script actions like file distribution or process and port checking. You can also write your own custom utilities and share them with others in your organization. Custom utilities are defined in XML, and your scripting can be done in multiple scripting languages (Perl, Python, etc.), *nix shell, Windows batch, and/or Ant.
Dar is a shell command that makes backup of a directory tree and files. Its features include splitting archives over several files, DVD, CD, ZIP, or floppies, compression, full or differential backups, strong encryption, proper saving and restoration of hard links, extended attributes, file forks, Door inodes, and sparse files, remote backup using pipes and external commands (such as ssh), and rearrangement of the "slices" of an existing archive. It can run commands between slices, before and after saving some defined files or directories (for a proper database backup, for example), and quickly retrieve individual files from differential and full backups. Several external GUIs exist as alternatives to its CLI interface, like kdar, DarGUI, SaraB, etc.
FW1-Loggrabber is a simple LEA (Log Export API) client for Checkpoint Firewall-1. It was developed to access Firewall-1 Logfiles from commandline from any host in the network. Without an LEA client you can only access logs with graphical Checkpoint Tools or via commandline directly on the Firewall-1 machine. The primary goal was to automate reports of FW-1 logs with LIRE.
JH2N (Java host to named conversion program) converts a hosts file to a full BIND 8 or 9 configuration. JH2N was inspired by the h2n.pl program included in the O'Reilly "DNS and BIND" book. Various options are available to enhance its operation by incuding external files. Using the simple host file syntax, very large and complex zones can be maintained.
