GNU TeXmacs is a free wysiwyw (what you see is what you want) editing platform with special features for scientists. The software aims to provide a unified and user friendly framework for editing structured documents with different types of content: text, mathematics, graphics, interactive content. TeXmacs can also be used as an interface to many external systems for computer algebra, numerical analysis, and statistics. New presentation styles can be written by the user and new features can be added to the editor using Scheme.

Drag and drop shapes and lines from a large library, add text in selectable fonts and colors, and modify the diagram with direct manipulation. Output formats include PostScript, MIF. and HTML with images and maps.
Medoosa is a documentation tool for C++ that can produce UML class diagrams, including generalizations and associations. Corrections can be made interactively in a diagram editor (Dia) and are fed back into the source as Javadoc-style comments. The layout must still be done by hand.
EFEU is suitable for handling data cubes, which are especially useful for building data warehouses. viztool generates diagrams of collections of Java classes. It presently has only two visualizations: one shows inheritance hierarchies, interfaces implemented and inner classes declared, the other, a more detailed view of the classes, including public fields and methods. It is structured to allow the implementation of other visualizations. It uses the Java 2D API for rendering, but does so with the expectation that the diagrams will be printed, rather than rendered to the screen (though screen rendering is supported).
