AstroStack is an easy-to-use astronomical imaging and processing tool geared towards the use of inexpensive webcam CCDs. It provides a very tunable environment to produce the best quality images. It supports the following features: tunable webcam sampling; image stacking (averaging, additive etc.); pre and post-capture gamma (brightness) and contrast correction; dark-shot CCD calibration (subtractive); and an internal 16-bit grey-scale format for optimal resolution.
Backshift is a deduplicating (variable-sized, content-based blocks), compressing (xz or bz2) backup program. Full saves and incrementals are pretty indistinct other than the amount of data transmitted, somewhat like with "rsync --link-dest" but without the huge number of hardlinks. It also de-duplicates large file content at a granularity of about 2 megabytes on average; there tends to be a unique copy of each file with size less than around 2 megabytes on average.
Chnorm is a simple command line utility for setting the owner, group, and the mode of given files and directories on a per file/per directory basis, recursively. It is especially useful if you often copy files with brain-dead permissions from filesystems not supporting the Unix permission scheme. It detects executables based on their contents and sets their permissions accordingly.
Launch is a menu for favorite applications and documents. Installing Launch creates a folder in the home directory called "Aliases". Any number of documents and shortcuts can be placed in there and arranged in a hierarchy of subfolders. At login, Launch scans this directory, and creates a menu in the status area from which these files can be opened instantly. There are no other options or features in the menu; just exactly what is found in "Aliases" at login and no more.
