getmail is intended as a simple, secure, and reliable replacement for fetchmail. It retrieves email (either all messages, or only unread messages) from one or more POP3, SPDS, or IMAP4 servers (with or without SSL) for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into qmail-style Maildirs, mboxrd files, or through external MDAs (command deliveries) specified on a per-account basis. getmail also has excellent support for domain (multidrop) mailboxes, including delivering messages to different users or destinations based on the envelope recipient address.
smake is a highly portable 'make' program that makes commands up to date based on rules in Makefiles and on the timestamps of the related files. It implements a complete superset of the features of the classical POSIX/Unix make program. It warns about typical misuse of dynamic macros that prevent portability of makefiles. Its automake features allow you to run scripts to automatically create rules for unknown platforms.
UnZip will list, test, or extract files from a ZIP archive, commonly found on DOS and Windows systems. A companion program, Zip, creates ZIP archives; both are part of the Info-ZIP project. Both programs are compatible with archives created by PKWARE's PKZIP or Nico Mak's WinZip, but in many cases the program options or default behaviors differ.
Zip is a compression and file packaging utility for Unix, VMS, DOS, OS/2, Windows 9x/NT, Amiga, Atari, Macintosh, BeOS, SMS/QDOS, MVS, VM/CMS, and others. It is analogous to a combination of the Unix commands tar(1) and compress(1) and is compatible with PKWARE's PKZIP and Nico Mak's WinZip. It's part of the Info-ZIP project.
Jacksum is a platform-independent utility for computing and verifying checksums, CRCs, and message digests, as well as timestamps of files. It supports most common checksum algorithms. The format of the output is fully customizable. The program is large-file-aware, and recursive file processing as well as platform-independent file verification are supported.
pngcheck is the official PNG tester and debugger. Originally designed simply to test the CRCs within a PNG image file (e.g., to check for ASCII rather than binary transfer), it has since been extended to check and optionally print almost all the information about a PNG image and to verify that it conforms to the PNG specification. It also includes partial support for MNG animations.
MP3 Automagic CD Cover Creator (MACCC) creates printable CD covers (inserts, frontcards, traycards, etc.) for MP3 CDs (front and back for jewel cases, front-only for slimline). The covers it outputs are in PDF, CDInsert, CDRLabel, HTML, and .txt formats. These covers are great for use with in-dash car MP3 CD players.
StormSiren is a personal severe weather monitoring tool that communicates information from National Weather Service issued bulletins on potential and imminent hazardous weather. When such bulletins are detected, the program sends a concise summary of the alert to one or more devices, including pagers, SMS-capable wireless phones, or e-mail accounts. The summaries are designed to fit within a 160 character display and contain the type of hazard, the affected counties and cities defined by the user, and the issue and expiration times of the bulletin.
Free Java is a development environment designed to help beginners write Java programs. Its editor includes syntax highlighting and an undo/redo function. It features a structure panel and a file browser. Compiling and running a program can be done with the push of a single button, and compiler errors are shown clearly. There is also a virtual console to show a program's console output. Free Java is based on J2SDK 1.3.
