RegExp@News allows you to search through newsgroup articles with regular expressions. The whole process of specifiying the newsgroups, expressions, editing the personal preferences, viewing the found articles, and so on can be accomplished via a Web frontend. The system is also able to send found articles to the users by email. The users can select the newsgroups and expressions to be used in the search, as well as when they want to receive the found articles by email. All data are stored in a MySQL database. The article fetching and processing backend is built with Perl, and the Web frontend is built with Apache and PHP.
Knewspost is a KDE frontend to newspost, a Usenet binary autoposter for Unix. It provides a graphical environment for autoposting binaries to newsgroups. It features tooltips for ease of use, post list creation, saving default values to a file, posting status window, and post log saving.
Newsstar fetches news and posts it to a local news server: INN, s-news, and sn are supported. What makes newsstar special is that it can make multiple simultaneous connections, not only to one server, but to several, supporting up to 10 "threads". Before fetching each article, it checks that it hasn't already been downloaded by another thread or in a previous session. It can also "pipeline" article requests to make better use of available bandwidth. SSL is supported.
Juta (Java Usenet Traffic Analyzer) is a Java (1.2 or higher) command line program that reads a text file with Usenet postings, and creates an HTML file with statistical information of those postings. This includes a list of the longest threads, authors with most postings, operating systems and newsclients used, and more. The inclusion of person-related information can be turned off to ensure privacy. The program is distributed as an executable JAR that also contains the source code. Also included in the distribution are several tools to process news postings: sort and count them, remove duplicates, list information on postings, grep and filter them.
