Secure Syslog is a cryptographically secure system logging tool for UNIX systems. Designed to replace the syslog daemon, ssyslog implements a cryptographic protocol called PEO-1 that allows the remote auditing of system logs. Auditing remains possible even if an intruder gains superuser privileges in the system, the protocol guarantees that the information logged before and during the intrusion process cannot be modified without the auditor (on a remote, trusted host) noticing.

Spinlogs is a shell script for rotating system logs. It is configurable through a text file similar in format and featureset to the newsyslog program in FreeBSD. Any Unix system running ksh should be able to use it. There are many options defining how and when log files should be rotated, and the config file is very straightforward. Rotating log files is a pretty simple task, but some commercial platforms don't include anything better than the old "newsyslog", so this is provided as a system-independent alternative.

It can run daily or hourly. Epylog is written specifically for large clusters where many systems log to a single loghost using syslog or syslog-ng.

NEPM monitors and reports uptime, critical events and their predecessors, access rates, bytes-served rates, and error rates for network node equipment. Hardware and software elements within the nodes are tracked and reported separately to make possible rapid fault isolation. It is a very general, highly configurable, two-part software system that captures and analyzes logged performance data from IP-networked equipment and reports it via email and Web pages. Current conditions and history from systems based on Windows NT/2000, Unix, and Unix-style operating systems can be tracked and reported. Most major server, switch and router systems can be monitored, without running agents on the target systems. NEPM itself is system-independent and can be hosted on either a Unix or Win NT system or a combination of these with equal ease.
