RefDB is a reference database and bibliography tool for SGML, XML, and LaTeX documents. Command-line tools allow interactive or scriptable access to the data which are stored in a SQL database. RefDB can also be accessed through a Web interface, a SRU interface, or via editor extensions (Emacs/vim). Libraries for Perl and PHP are available for programmers. TeXtrace is a collection of scripts that convert any TeX font into a Type1 .pfb outline font immediately suitable for use with dvips, pdftex, Acroread, and many other programs. The main advantage of using Type1 fonts with TeX is that Acroread renders TeX's bitmap fonts ugly on screen, but it renders outline fonts beutifully and fast.
Genmenu can generate menus for Blackbox, Fluxbox, Openbox, Window Maker, and Enlightenment based on the program binaries found installed on a system. The list of programs to search for are contained within the script. Users can, to a limited degree, customize their menus via a set of interactive questions.
smake is a highly portable 'make' program that makes commands up to date based on rules in Makefiles and on the timestamps of the related files. It implements a complete superset of the features of the classical POSIX/Unix make program. It warns about typical misuse of dynamic macros that prevent portability of makefiles. Its automake features allow you to run scripts to automatically create rules for unknown platforms.
mkmed is a set of tools for maintaining software packages. The mkmed program automatically generates system- and configuration-independent intermediate files of a package, including build scripts. Unlike make, mkmed works bottom-up, so it can infer information you would otherwise have to express. mkmed-version creates a new distributable version of a package, and mkmed-tar creates a tarball of a distributable version.
Mpkg is a ports collection. Each port contains the information necessary to automatically download, compile, and install a specific program, and also information about dependencies between programs. Ports collections are common on various BSD flavors, but mpkg is designed to be portable to any UNIX-like system. Development has been done on DEC OSF/1, GNU/Linux, and Solaris. Mpkg also tries to install all programs in separate directories, never touching the common directories like /usr and /etc.
