RefDB is a reference database and bibliography tool for SGML, XML, and LaTeX documents. Command-line tools allow interactive or scriptable access to the data which are stored in a SQL database. RefDB can also be accessed through a Web interface, a SRU interface, or via editor extensions (Emacs/vim). Libraries for Perl and PHP are available for programmers. RefDB provides sophisticated character encoding handling, using Unicode by default.
References for TeX and Friends is an ongoing project which provides a help file for LaTeX (and its friends like ConTeXt, Metapost, Metafont, etc.) using a state-of-the-art source format, DocBook/XML. Various output formats can be generated from the source file. Anyone can write a converter for any desired output format. Because the source file is XML, the easiest way to do this might be to use XSLT.
IDX-DocBook2LaTeX is a stylesheet which translates DocBook documents into LaTeX. It is written in Perl, using the XML::XPathScript package from AxKit. It features the ability to handle tables, indices, figures, footnotes, and more. The XSLT-like templating philosophy built into XPathScript makes it easy to extend.
BibORB is a Web-based tool for managing bibliographies. It allows the sharing of bibliographies and provides an interface for editing references. It also eases the management of electronic versions (.ps, .pdf, etc.) of papers associated with your references. Classification is possible using groups, and search functions are included. BibTeX bibliographies can be imported, and selected references can be exported to BibTeX, Ris, and DocBook format.
sMArTH is an equation editor built on open Web standards. The editor itself uses a SVG interface and the application logic is implemented in ECMAScript using the DOM. Both MathML and LaTeX are supported as exporting formats in addition to the SVG format. The most important mathematical content from both LaTeX and MathML is already provided, and this should cover the need of the majority of users. The graphical user interface allows even the most complex equations to be built with simple "Point and Click" techniques instead of writing convoluted typesetting code.
SiSU (Structured information, Serialized Units) is a lightweight markup based, text structuring and publishing framework (that features granular search). With minimal markup of a plaintext file, it produces: plain-text, HTML, XHTML, XML, ODF, LaTeX, PDF, and populates an SQL database at an object/paragraph level for granular searches. Prepare documents using your text editor of choice, then use SiSU to generate the desired output formats. SiSU is controlled from the command line.
