terminal_colors is a tool to display a terminal color chart for 8, 16, 88, and 256 color terminals. It provides all the functionality of the various similar scripts found around the Web with some additional bells and whistles. It automatically detects 8, 16, 88, and 256 color capabilities (via ncurses) and displays the appropriate color charts. It can display the colors as blocks or (2D) cubes, optionally with color values overlaid in int or hex values. It can show the full rgb text string as well. It can also show the display with a vertical (default) or horizontal orientation. It has the option of additional padding and supports -h --help as well. It also works as a utility for converting between 256 and 88 color values.

S-terminal lets you create a secure X terminal. Regular X terminals pass unencrypted data between you the remote machine. S-terminal creates an encrypted tunnel through which all X traffic passes. It replaces the remote xdm login screen with a local application that collects username and password, then sets up an ssh tunnel to the remote host and starts a session. It is highly configurable both in appearance and behavior, and deployed S-terminals can be remotely administered. Best of all, it can be added to a KNOPPIX CD to create an instant, bootable, secure X terminal CD.

Terminal is a modern terminal emulator for the Unix/Linux desktop, primarly for the Xfce desktop environment. It was developed because Xfce needed a lightweight and easy-to-use terminal emulator that didn't require the user to install the GNOME libraries, but still provided a worthy alternative to the GNOME terminal emulator, with all the bells and whistles.

Multixterm creates multiple xterms that can be driven together or separately. It can be used to login via SSH to multiple hosts and control them simultaneously, or for ad hoc things where you want to see the results as you type. Each xterm may also be driven separately. Multixterm is scriptable so that you can easily fire up, for example, a dozen xterms with a single command, tiled nicely on your screen. In addition to SSH, multixterm can drive rlogin, telnet, passwd, or any program that runs in an xterm.

evilvte is a terminal emulator. It supports almost everything VTE provides. It also supports tabs, automatic hiding of the tab bar, and the ability to switch encoding at runtime. Configuration is done by editing the source code and recompiling it. The size of a standard stripped binary of evilvte is less than 9 kilobytes.

ggiterm is a software terminal emulator like xterm. However instead of X, it uses the GGI system for its rendering, which allows it to be displayed on anything from a framebuffer to multi-screens across networked hosts (including ordinary X sessions). Spinner is useful for keeping telnet and ssh links from dropping due to inactivity. Many firewalls and some ISPs drop connections when they are perceived as idle. By having spinner running, the server is constantly sent a tiny amount of data over the link, preserving the connection. Spinner thus acts as a keep-alive. It displays a little "spinning" ASCII character in the top left corner of your terminal. It supports any terminal capable of handling VT100-style escape codes. Spinner can also function transparently by only sending null characters to the terminal. In this mode Spinner supports any terminal. It also has a mode called "Ghost in the Machine" in which you can use Spinner to write the spinner character to any TTY, not just your own.

AbulÉdu is a Ubuntu-based distribution for primary schools. It is currently in French but most of the tools can be translated. An AbulÉdu server can handle Mac, Windows (samba), GNU/Linux and X terminal (with LTSP) clients. The server acts as a central gateway for Web, mail, and printing, and facilitates the management of classes, pupils, and teachers. Everybody can publish Web pages on an intranet using Apache and all administration tasks are performed using a browser. The result is that a teacher who is not a computer specialist can install and manage a school network.
