AKFAvatar is a fancy graphical user interface for text oriented applications where an avatar appears on the screen and provides information in a balloon. It also supports recorded audio files. Applications for AKFAvatar can be written in Lua, and there are interfaces for C and Free Pascal. A number of ready-to-use applications and modules are provided, including a text viewer and a module that makes question-answer exercises. For POSIX-compatible operating systems there is a man page viewer and a terminal emulator, which makes it possible to run many existing terminal-based programs in this fancy environment.
xtermcontrol enables dynamic control of XFree86 xterm properties. It makes it easy to change colors, titles, fonts, and the geometry of a running xterm, as well as to report the current settings of the properties. Window manipulations such as (de)iconify, raise and lower, maximize and restore, and reset are also supported. It also lets advanced users issue any xterm control sequence.
Qodem is a re-implementation of the Qmodem DOS shareware communications package, updated for more modern uses. Major features include Unicode support, scrollback buffer, capture file, screen dump, dialing directory, keyboard macros, script support, Xmodem, Ymodem, Zmodem, and Kermit. It can connect over serial port, telnet, ssh, rlogin, and command line, and supports multiple terminal emulations including ANSI.SYS, Avatar, VT100/102, VT220, and Linux.
LibVNCServer is a library that makes it easy to make a VNC server. All you do is provide a frame buffer and some I/O functions, and call a function each time the frame buffer changes. It supports all encodings known, including tight, zlib, ZRLE, and cursor encodings. It also includes the HTTP server from Xvnc, so you can start a java viewer by surfing to http://my.vnc.server:5801 or similar. It includes a beta version of LibVNCClient, which makes it easy to make a VNC client. Also included is LinuxVNC, which is to the Linux console as WinVNC is to the Windows desktop.
Twin is a text-mode window environment. It turns a text terminal into a X11-style display with window manager, terminal windows, and can also serve as display for remote applications. Each terminal window provides the functions of a text-mode Linux console. Twin runs on X11, libggi, itself, the Linux console, and any termcap/ncurses-compatible tty. It supports multiple simultaneous displays, and can attach/detach each display on the fly.
rxvt-unicode is a clone of the well known terminal emulator rxvt, modified to store text in Unicode and to use locale-correct input and output. It also supports mixing multiple fonts at the same time, including Xft fonts, real transparency, and an optional embedded Perl interpreter that allows you to extend your terminal easily.
AbulÉdu is a Ubuntu-based distribution for primary schools. It is currently in French but most of the tools can be translated. An AbulÉdu server can handle Mac, Windows (samba), GNU/Linux and X terminal (with LTSP) clients. The server acts as a central gateway for Web, mail, and printing, and facilitates the management of classes, pupils, and teachers. Everybody can publish Web pages on an intranet using Apache and all administration tasks are performed using a browser. The result is that a teacher who is not a computer specialist can install and manage a school network.
x11vnc allows one to remotely view and interact with real X displays (i.e. a display corresponding to a physical monitor, keyboard, and mouse) with any VNC viewer. It is designed to be compatible with all Unix variants and Mac OS X, and depends on a small set of standard libraries. It supports SSL/TLS and VeNCrypt encryption, Unix password logins, single port access, Zeroconf, file transfer, and UltraVNC extensions. It is part of the LibVNCServer project.
Lan Core is software that lets you build a thin client network on a Windows operating system. It was originally designed to work in a server or workstation with Windows XP Professional and using the native remote desktop protocol or RDP. To this end, the Lan Core package includes: (1) the Preboot Execution Environment or PXE service, a server application used to boot the thin clients (also referred as terminals or clients) in a local area network; (2) the thin client operating system (Thin OS), an embedded system based on Linux; and (3) an interface application used to manage the PXE service and thin clients. The thin clients' boot is done through a local area network (LAN), and it is based on the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) protocol. In order to do it, Lan Core also provides two additional services: a DHCP server and a Trivial FTP server for Windows, used to assign IP addresses and transfer boot files, respectively.
