highest is a program that efficiently finds the n highest (or lowest) numbers in a list of numbers on stdin. The traditional way of computing this using GNU sort should have a running time of O(n log n), where n is the number of numbers to check. Highest should have a running time of O(n log m), where m is the number of numbers you want to keep. A graph comparing the performance of highest to that of GNU sort is provided.
Edile is intended to be a basic but useful text editor for system administration and scripting purposes. It's something between a script and an application meant for quickly opening and viewing or editing files from the command line or piped from another process. Edile requires Python and PyGTK, and if you have GTKSourceView, it will use that. It has been tested on XP and Ubuntu.
Belier allows opening a shell or executing a command on a remote computer through an SSH session. The main feature of Belier is its ability to cross several intermediate computers before realizing the job. You can execute commands with any account available on the remote computer. It is possible to switch an account on intermediate computers before accessing the final computer, and Belier will generate one script for each final computer to reach.
Petit was developed to quickly analyze syslog and Apache log files in large environments. It can also be used for word discovery within log data. It is a general purpose tool that can do hashing, word counts, and command line graphing of Apache and syslog files. It is designed to be a standard Unix tool that can be employed with pipes or by opening files. Petit works by sifting data with standard patterns and allows for custom filters and fingerprints. This leaves the analyst with data that is both varied and interesting.
classh is yet another wrapper around ssh for running commands on a number of hosts concurrently. It is similar to xCAT, pssh, Cluster ssh, and a gaggle of other utilities. The only pre-requisite for classh is Python 2.4 or later, and no formal installation is required; a copy of the classh.py file is sufficient to run commands. The SSHJobMan class from classh can be used to create custom job management scripts. This class lets you either wait until all output has returned from a batch job or process the results as they become available by incrementally polling the running job. The output, error messages, exit code, and start and completion times of each job are stored in the results. It's been tested on jobs of over 25,000 hosts and handles over 10,000 hosts per hour across a WAN and without noticeable impact on the administrator's host.
Vimv is a utility to help rename various files at once using a text editor. It opens the list of files in a directory inside a text editor (vi by default). Then, any changes made in the editor will be reflected in the filesystem (the files in the directory will be renamed to the names saved in the editor).
Bcfg2 helps system administrators produce a consistent, reproducible, and verifiable description of their environment, and offers visualization and reporting tools to aid in day-to-day administrative tasks. It is based on an operational model in which the specification can be used to validate and optionally change the state of clients, but in a feature unique to bcfg2 the client's response to the specification can also be used to assess the completeness of the specification. Using this feature, bcfg2 provides an objective measure of how good a job an administrator has done in specifying the configuration of client systems. Bcfg2 is therefore built to help administrators construct an accurate, comprehensive specification. Bcfg2 has been designed from the ground up to support gentle reconciliation between the specification and current client states. It is designed to gracefully cope with manual system modifications. Bcfg2 can also enable the construction of complex change management and deployment strategies.
pssh and shmux have some customization issues, like inflexible IPs/hostnames specification, simultaneously spawning threads for all hosts (pssh), which is a problem with many hosts, or having to download/upload files with a separate command. cssh.py was written to resolve such problems. It has a fixed (configurable) length queue of active SSH threads, the ability to specify IPs/hostnames in 3 ways, configurable username, password, and SSH port per host, simultaneous download and upload of files/directories (using a built-in SCP implementation), again with configurable queue length, the ability to upload and execute a script with one switch, and many other useful options, like additional saving cmd outputs in a separate file for each machine (-d output_dir), or suppressing printing out hosts for which a given command produced no output (-b).
