Smitten differs from traditional media centres in three major ways. It contains no media playback at all, which makes it very small (and suitable for porting to embedded systems) and quick to initialize. It targets a TV display and interface, which means there's less information on any particular screen, and a much simpler control interface consisting of left, right, up, down, and select. No mouse is required. It is also highly skinnable, and cross-platform to most systems. Essentially, it provides an easy-to-use menu system that allows the user to navigate a hierarchy of files, and view them using an (external) tool.

CDnavigator is an application that files your CDs and DVDs in a database. It also deposits information about photos (JPEG), music (MP3), and films stored in such media. You can also store other metadata such as notes and ratings. You can search over all items and save the choices. CDnavigator supports an automatic cache that saves the most frequently used data on hard disk. Photos can be viewed directly in the application. It can download new photos from a camera, sort them into albums, and prepare them for burning on CD.

The MediaMVP Media Center (mvpmc) is a media player written in C. It currently runs on the Hauppauge MediaMVP hardware. It can play video (including live TV), audio (including live radio), show pictures, and retrieve Yahoo! weather. mvpmc can access media from a MythTV, ReplayTV, Hauppauge, VLC, or SqueezeCenter (aka SlimServer) server. It can also access media via UPNP, HTTP, NFS, and CIFS. There is a VNC viewer built in. It understands MPEG1 and MPEG2 video, MP3, OGG, WAV, AC3, and FLAC audio and JPG, BMP, and PNG images.

GMediaRender is a UPnP media renderer for POSIX-compliant systems, such as GNU/Linux or UNIX. It implements the server component that provides UPnP controllers a means to render media content (audio, video, and images) from a UPnP media server.
