The Advanced Bash Scripting Guide is both a reference and a tutorial on shell scripting. This comprehensive book, the equivalent of 1,032 print pages, covers almost every aspect of shell scripting. It contains 382 profusely commented illustrative examples, a number of tables, and a cross-linked index/glossary. Not just a shell scripting tutorial, this book also provides an introduction to basic programming techniques, such as sorting and recursion. Included scripts are the Game of Life, a Perquackey variant, a Morse code trainer, and an implementation of the Gronsfeld Cipher. This book is suited for both individual study and classroom use. It covers Bash, up to and including version 4.2. Apache Toolbox provides a means to easily compile Apache (IPv4/6) SSL, PHP(v3/v4), MySQL, Jakarta, a large number of modules (61 3rd party modules and 36 default Apache modules, static or as DSOs), and GD libraries with PNG+JPEG+Freetype2+zlib support. It is fully customizable and menu-driven. Everything is compiled from source, and wget is used to download any missing modules. It can also check for RPMs that might cause problems and create an RPM with your selections.

Buildkernel is an intelligent shell script that automates the task of building a Linux kernel. For beginning users, it handles the process from beginning to end, prompting the user when they have to do something. Advanced users can use it to build multiple kernels with little effort. Buildkernel will download kernel and pcmcia source, remove unnecessary code, create symlinks, automatically patch the kernel, build the kernel, modules, and pcmcia modules (nicely), and install them to hard disk or floppy, running LILO as necessary.

changetrack is a program to monitor changes to files. If files are modified one day, and the machine starts working incorrectly some days later, changetrack can provide information on which files were modified, and help locate the problem. daemon turns other processes into daemons. There are many tedious tasks that need to be performed to correctly set up a daemon process; daemon performs these tasks for other processes. This is useful for writing daemons in languages other than C, C++, or Perl (e.g. sh, Java). If you want to write daemons in languages that can link against C functions (e.g. C, C++), see libslack, which contains the core functionality of daemon.

The Event monitor project is an approach to network management based on message passing between manager and managed nodes. It's based on a client/server platform, where the server is the manager node, and all clients are managed nodes. This tool is under development, but has lots of features implemented, like a graphical console, message passing layer, one disk monitor and clients for sending messages (both API and binary forms are provided).

Ftwalk is a high level script programming language, very similar to awk, but greatly extended to include a richer type system, object-oriented features, 300+ built-in functions, extensibility through dynamic libraries, etc., which makes it roughly comparable to languages like Perl. It does file tree searches, and was originally used to implement selective redundant copy backup stores. It can be run interactively as a calculator.
