Mandelbrot Cellular Automaton Combines features of the Mandelbrot set and Conway's Game of Life. Displays snapshots of the Mandelbrot set at each stage of calculation; optionally includes interference from neighbouring cells (pixels) for a nonlinear and somewhat unpredictable result. Options are set at compile time. Most suitable for fractal or cellular automata enthusiasts; also visually interesting.
MIT Photonic Bands (MPB) is a free program to compute the band structures (dispersion relations) and electromagnetic modes of periodic dielectric structures, and is applicable to photonic crystals (photonic band-gap materials), optical waveguides, and a wide range of other optical problems. Its features include: fully-vectorial 3D computations, a flexible user interface based upon the GNU Guile scripting language, output in HDF format, and iterative, targeted eigensolver methods to address very large problems by solving for only a few states near a specified frequency. It runs on both serial machines and parallel machines with MPI.
Math Magic Sci-Calculator is a console-based calculator that is modular so all the calculations work no matter the input type. It has the added benifit of being able enter an entire calculation on the commandline (e.g., ./mmcalc "(1.25*0x1A/2^4)"), and it also works with hex and octal numbers.
Moodss is a modular monitoring application, which supports operating systems (Linux, UNIX, Windows, etc.), databases (MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, DB2, ODBC, etc.), networking (SNMP, Apache, etc.), and any device or process for which a module can be developed (in Tcl, Python, Perl, Java, and C). An intuitive GUI with full drag'n'drop support allows the construction of dashboards with graphs, pie charts, etc., while the thresholds functionality includes emails and user defined scripts. Monitored data can be archived in a SQL database by both the GUI and the companion daemon, so that complete history over time can be made available from Web pages or common spreadsheet software. It can even be used for future behavior prediction or capacity planning, from the included predictor tool, based on powerful statistical methods and artificial neural networks.
