The rlpr package makes it possible (or at the very least, easier) to print files on remote sites to your local printer. It includes BSD-compatible replacements for `lpr', `lpq', and `lprm', whose functionality is a superset of their BSD counterparts. In other words, with the rlpr package, you can do everything you could do with the BSD printing commands, and more. The programs are all smaller, cleaner, and more portable than their BSD equivalents, and supported on just about any POSIX.1 system.
The HP OfficeJet Linux driver provides printing, scanning, and photo-card access support for most Hewlett-Packard multi-function peripherals connected to a parallel port, USB port, or LAN via selected HP JetDirect print servers. Additional applications are provided to view the contents of the front-panel LCD and to access other control and status features of the device.
PDFdirectory is a PHP/MySQL creation of a printable directory in PDF format. Uses could be for church groups, sports teams, etc. Selected members of the organization can directly enter information on members, teams, clubs, etc. Custom pages can be created offline, exported to PDF, and uploaded to be included in the document. These pages will be combined with the auto-generated output from the database to create the final document.
pdfposter can be used to create a large poster by building it from multple pages and/or printing it on large media. It expects as input a PDF file, normally printing on a single page. The output is again a PDF file, maybe containing multiple pages together, thus building the poster. The input page will be scaled to obtain the desired size. This is much like poster does for Postscript files, but works with PDF instead, since sometimes poster does not like your files converted from PDF. Indeed, pdfposter was inspired by poster.
The mminstance package creates instances of PostScript Type1 multiple master fonts. (An instance is a version of the font as it looks at one point in its design space.) Mminstance lets you use multiple master fonts with programs that don't handle them directly, such as afm2tfm, ps2pdf, ps2pk, and X Type1 font servers. Mminstance contains two programs. Mmafm creates AFM font metrics from multiple master AMFM and AFM files, and Mmpfb creates a single-master font outline file (PFA or PFB) from the multiple master font itself.
Foomatic is the printer/driver database of Linuxprinting.org. The XML-based system integrates free software printer drivers with all common spoolers (CUPS, LPRng, LPD, GNUlpr, PPR, PDQ, CPS, etc.) in UNIX. It generates Adobe-compliant PPD files which, together with the foomatic-rip filter script, allow easy setup of print queues with access to all driver options. Foomatic ships with every major Linux distro and its Web site is used as a reference by vendors. It is an up-to-date and distribution-independent repository of printer and driver data, scripts, and utilities, accompanied by the wealth of knowledge, tips and tricks, solutions, and enlightenment provided by its newsgroups.
Holodeck10 is a Java-based application that runs on Linux. The purpose of the application is to allow the user to lay out images to be printed. It supports the basic function that includes orientation selection (LANDSCAPE or PORTRAIT), paper selection (NA_Letter or ISO_A4), and layout (1x1, 1x2, 2x2, 2x3, 4x5, 6x8, and Custom). A file chooser is used with a file filter to select image types of *.jpeg, *.jpg, *.gif, *.xpm, and *.png. A printerjob is used to send the page to the printer.
