CUPS is a standards-based printing system for Mac OS X and other Unix-like operating systems. It provides the System V and Berkeley command line interfaces, and uses the Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP") as the basis for managing print jobs and queues. The Line Printer Daemon (LPD) Server Message Block (SMB), and AppSocket (a.k.a. JetDirect) protocols are also supported with reduced functionality. CUPS adds network printer browsing and PostScript Printer Description ("PPD") based printing options to support real world printing.
Gutenprint (formerly Gimp-Print) is a collection of printer drivers for Unix/Linux that currently supports over 1400 printers. It emphasizes quality and flexibility, offering a wide variety of options to meet most printing needs. It includes a CUPS driver, an IJS-based Ghostscript driver, Foomatic data, an enhanced Print plugin for The GIMP, and other printer maintenance utilities. It can be used equally well for fast printing of text or critical printing of high quality graphics and photographs.
HTMLDOC converts HTML files and Web pages into indexed HTML, PostScript, and PDF files suitable for online viewing and printing. It can be used as a standalone GUI application, in a batch document processing environment, as a Web-based report generation application, or in embedded environments to support printing of HTML content. It runs on all Unix platforms as well as Mac OS X and Windows 2000 and higher.
txt2pdf PRO is a very flexible and powerfu program that converts files from text to PDF format. It extends txt2pdf with features such as the ability to add form feeds, to skip the first form feed, to set the top and left margins, to use images (JPEGs) in the background, and to create compressed PDFs.
Foomatic is the printer/driver database of Linuxprinting.org. The XML-based system integrates free software printer drivers with all common spoolers (CUPS, LPRng, LPD, GNUlpr, PPR, PDQ, CPS, etc.) in UNIX. It generates Adobe-compliant PPD files which, together with the foomatic-rip filter script, allow easy setup of print queues with access to all driver options. Foomatic ships with every major Linux distro and its Web site is used as a reference by vendors. It is an up-to-date and distribution-independent repository of printer and driver data, scripts, and utilities, accompanied by the wealth of knowledge, tips and tricks, solutions, and enlightenment provided by its newsgroups.
PDF::API2 is 'The Next Generation' of Text::PDF::API, a Perl module-chain that facilitates the creation and modification of PDF files. It features support for the 14 base PDF Core Fonts, TrueType fonts, and Adobe-Type1, with unicode mappings, embedding of bitmap images, compression via zlib, and a rich object-oriented API.
Argyll is an ICC compatible color management system. It supports accurate ICC profile creation for scanners, CMYK printers, and film recorders, and calibration and profiling of displays. Spectral sample data is supported, allowing a selection of illuminants observer types, and paper fluorescent whitener additive compensation. Profiles can also incorporate source specific gamut mappings for perceptual and saturation intents. Gamut mapping and profile linking uses the CIECAM02 appearance model, a unique gamut mapping algorithm, and a wide selection of rendering intents. It also includes code for a fast 8-bit raster color conversion engine as well as support for fast, fully accurate 16-bit conversion. Device color gamuts can also be viewed and compared using a VRML viewer.
