Finesse is a numeric simulation for laser interferometers using the frequency domain and Hermite-Gauss modes. It is easy to use for students. For basic use, including graphical output, no commercial software is required. The implemented physics are well documented in a 180-page manual. Simple examples are provided. Finesse can be used to compute a great variety of interferometer signals for control systems, including longitudinal control, alignment control, and thermal compensation.

FísicaLab is an educational application to solve physics problems. The problems are set up by adding elements from the palette to a chalkboard and entering the data for each element. The elements are objects such as blocks, pulleys, motors, and forces. It can use the SI and English unit systems, scientific notation, and many conversion factors. The types of problems that can be solved are kinematics of particles (including circular motion), static analysis of particles and rigid bodies in 2D, dynamic analysis of particles in 2D (excluding the dynamics of circular motion), heat, calorimetry, ideal gas, and expansion. The static and dynamic problems are entered by constructing the free body diagrams of the objects.

LaserCalc is a tool to calculate optical paths and resonators based on Gaussian beam matrix optics. Optical elements such as lenses or distances can be set up to an optical path. An input beam parameter (z & w value) as well as the wavelength can be set. The programm calculates the propagation of the beam along the path. For an optical resonator, the TEM00 Eigenmode of a given wavelength is automatically calculated. Furthermore, a stability parameter is derived.

Penacho is a simulation software that calculates and draws the gas dispersion of a smokestack in the atmosphere. It consists of a GUI to enter air conditions, an atmospheric dispersion modeling solver, and an interactive 3D graphics engine. Penacho draws the plume evolution, the particles' deposition and the pollutant concentration distribution, as an isosurface and a grid plane for each coordinate axis. Penacho exports its simulation results as a text file, VTK structured points, or CSV (suitable for spreadsheets).

Slipstream is a multi-body vehicle simulator. Instead of using some sort of specific empirical model of a particular type of vehicle, vehicles are modeled as assemblies of interconnected moving parts. This allows any kind of vehicle to be modeled, and the whole model is completely parametric so that everything can be configured from the mass of the chassis to suspension geometry and engine and transmission characteristics. Slipstream can be executed either in real-time or off-line through control scripts, and every quantity calculated during the simulation can be logged for plotting or further analysis, so it can be used as a game or as a tool to study vehicle dynamics.

You define your mechanism graphically, for the most part, but can define your forces and coordinates textually in order to reach full precision. It requires Java 6 in order to run.
