CGI::Application is a Perl framework intended to make it easier to create sophisticated, reusable Web-based applications. This module implements a methodology which can make Web software easier to design, easier to document, easier to write, and easier to evolve. CGI::Application builds on standard, non-proprietary technologies and techniques, such as the Common Gateway Interface and Lincoln D. Stein's excellent CGI.pm module. CGI::Application judiciously avoids employing technologies and techniques which would bind a developer to any one set of tools, operating system, or Web server.

Authentication may be done through /etc/passwd, PAM or an authentication plug-in. Resource limits are supported. The server may run standalone or from inetd. chroot() jails are supported along with sophisticated programmable access control rules. It provides a unifying abstraction for all of the interesting performance data in a system, and allows client applications to easily retrieve and process any subset of that data using a single API. A client-server architecture allows multiple clients to monitor the same host, and a single client to monitor multiple hosts. Archive logging and replay are integrated so that a client application can use the same API to process real-time data from a host or historical data from an archive.
