TeXcount is a Perl script for counting words in LaTeX documents. It parses valid LaTeX documents counting words, headers, formulae (mathematics), and floats/begin-end groups. To run the script, you can either download it and run it on your own computer, or you can use the Web interface. TeXcount is included in the CTAN TeX/LaTeX archive, and thus included in several TeX distributions. If you have TeX installed, chances are you may already have TeXcount.
SyncServer is a Firefox sync server written in Perl. Mozilla's Firefox sync server, which is written in Python, has many dependencies and is quite tricky to install on enterprise distributions which don't ship with all those requirements. This syncserver implements the syncserver user API and storage API as an fcgi application. It is entirely written in Perl.
Isoline Retrieval uses supervised statistical classification to retrieve isolines from cross-track scanning or similar satellites. It contains software to generate training data using collocation or radiative transfer simulations, as well as routines to interpolate the final fields using a variation of multi-linear interpolation or kernel estimation. The currently-supported satellites are the Advance Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) series and, to a lesser extent, the Global Ozone Measurement Experiment (GOME). An ambitious researcher, however, could easily adapt the codes to a similar satellite.
Xtract is an extendable, scriptable data extraction framework. It is meant to be a unified framework to perform data extraction tasks. It includes a sample module to identify JPEG files. A common, shared framework similar to this makes it possible to develop an easily deployable and commonly held set of data extraction tools that exceed the capability of any closed-source alternative. The script-based nature of Xtract makes it portable across architectures, and its modular design allows the easy addition of capabilities to identify new types of files or other data.
The satpass script provides satellite visibility predictions, given the position of the observer and the NORAD element sets for the desired satellites. It can acquire the NORAD element sets directly from any site supported by Astro::SpaceTrack. It can acquire the observer's latitude and longitude from http://geocoder.us/, look up star positions in the SIMBAD catalog, and more.
Mail::DeliveryStatus::BounceParser analyzes RFC822 bounce messages and returns a structured description of the addresses that bounced and the reason they bounced; it also returns information about the original returned message, including the Message-ID. It works best with RFC1892 delivery reports, but will gamely attempt to understand any bounce message no matter what MTA generated it.
