DragonFly belongs to the same class of operating systems as other BSD-derived systems and Linux. It is based on the same Unix ideals and APIs and shares ancestor code with other BSD operating systems. DragonFly is differentiated from other operating systems in its class by, among others, the HAMMER file system, Virtual Kernels, swapcache, and the pervasive use of soft token locks. DragonFly provides an opportunity for the BSD base to grow in an entirely different direction from the ones taken in the FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD series.

Aloofix is conceptually similar to the Ubuntu JeOS (Just enough OS), but much more aggressive when it comes to the term "just enough". The build environment consists of a collection of Makefiles, scripts, and configuration files capable of creating a bootable ISO image. This ISO image contains a small set of scripts and utility programs for installing Aloofix on a primary hard drive in a VM environment. The build environment provides the raw materials for creating and provisioning a set of guest instances for VirtualBox, VMWare, and Qemu.
VoiceBuntu (formerly Ubunterisk) is an Ubuntu-based live CD that uses Asterisk and VoiceOne to provide VoIP service without any system installation process. VoiceOne is a Web-based GUI for the Asterisk PBX. Ubunterisk can be used as a phone client as well as a PBX server. Ubunterisk can be administered either remotely or by accessing its local GUI. A capser-rw filesystem is used to store the system's data persistently.
