VLC media player is a multimedia player, framework, streamer, and encoder. It can play inputs like files, network streams, DVDs, audio CDs, Blu-Rays, capture devices, and screens. It can play most audio and video codecs and formats (MPEG 1/2/4, H264, VC-1, DivX, WMV, Vorbis, AC3, AAC, MKV, etc.), but can also be used to convert to different formats and/or send streams through the network.
HandBrake is a multi-threaded DVD to MPEG-4 ripper and converter. It can encode directly from DVDs (even encrypted ones) or from VIDEO_TS folders. AC3, LPCM, and MPEG audio tracks are supported. The output can be contained in MP4, AVI, or OGM files, and the output audio is encoded in either AAC, MP3, or Vorbis. Other features include support for 2-pass encoding, encoding of two audio tracks, a bitrate calculator, and deinterlacing, cropping, and scaling of the original picture.
ffmpegX is a Mac OS X GUI designed to easily operate more than 20 powerful Unix open-source video and audio processing tools, including ffmpeg, mpeg2enc, and mencoder (the MPEG-4 encoder with subtitles support). ffmpegX includes a bitrate calculator, a video player, and a series of video tools which can split, join, or fix video, compress a DVD to 4GB, author many VCD/SVCD images into one DVD image, and convert SRT subtitles to DVD Studio Pro 1.5 format.
iVideo is multitrack video editing software, created in Cocoa (Objective-C) and using QuickTime. It was developed for all general video purposes, and to include all of the features of QuickTime Pro and iMovie. It is almost complete; you can import video from digital cameras (using FireWire) or from any QuickTime format supported file, then edit, modify, and mix them, and apply any video effect on or between them. You can then export them to any QuickTime supported format.
CyTV is a streaming solution for elgato's EyeTV family of TV tuners. It allows you to watch TV and recorded programs over a wired or wireless network, and supports EyeTV USB, 200, 300, and 400. EyeTV 410, 500, 610, and Plextor's ConvertX (PX-TV402U) should also work. You can pause and resume live TV on the client ("timeshift"), and you can also change channels remotely.
