Big Brother is a combination of monitoring methods. Unlike SNMP where information is just collected and devices polled, Big Brother is designed in such a way that each local system broadcasts its own information to a central location. Simultaneously, Big Brother also polls all networked systems from a central location. This creates a highly efficient and redundant method for proactive network monitoring.

columbus is useful when you use your machine in different networks (it's great for laptop users). It uses ARP pings to look for known MAC-IP address correspondences, and can do this even when no IP address has been assigned yet. columbus can be hooked up to your network script. It can also be hooked up to your apmd and be told to re-check the network each time the computer wakes up. It also has a modified version of one of Donald Becker's link check tools to check your network when your network cable is plugged back in and if necessary, execute all synchronisation steps.
