Dar is a shell command that makes backup of a directory tree and files. Its features include splitting archives over several files, DVD, CD, ZIP, or floppies, compression, full or differential backups, strong encryption, proper saving and restoration of hard links, extended attributes, file forks, Door inodes, and sparse files, remote backup using pipes and external commands (such as ssh), and rearrangement of the "slices" of an existing archive. It can run commands between slices, before and after saving some defined files or directories (for a proper database backup, for example), and quickly retrieve individual files from differential and full backups. Several external GUIs exist as alternatives to its CLI interface, like kdar, DarGUI, SaraB, etc.

Chiron FS is a FUSE based filesystem that implements replication at the filesystem level like RAID 1 does at the device level. The replicated filesystem may be of any kind you want; the only requisite is that you mount it. Simplebackup is a cross-platform backup program. It reads a configuration file, then it builds a compressed file for each of your backup directories or files on your backup list, and places the compressed files into another location. For example, this location can be a network mapped drive in Windows, an NFS mounted drive in Unix, another hard disk, an FTP server, an SFTP (Secure FTP) server, an HTTP (WebDAV) server, one or more email accounts, or a tape device (Unix only). This will duplicate your information, doing the so called "backup".

bdmn is client/server-oriented backup system. The daemon runs on the machine being backed up, and the client runs on the machine that stores the backup. It is very simple, but very fast. It only uses tar, gzip, uuencode, and Perl, so it is portable to many operating systems. It includes a very simple access control system for itself.

This is the "progress" utility from NetBSD, ported to Linux and Solaris. The progress utility allows the file I/O of progresses to be monitored. It includes support for gzip-compressed files, so "progress -z -f file.tar.gz tar xf -" would show the progress of extracting file.tar.gz.
