The WorldForge Project is developing a complete, distributable framework for massively multiplayer online roleplaying games. The system will include a number of fully developed roleplaying worlds with unique maps, histories, creatures and legends. To run these worlds on the servers a balanced but highly customisable set of roleplaying rules is being developed. Provisions will be made to allow others the ability to recode the servers to use alternate rule sets. A standard protocol named Atlas is being developed to allow a common communication layer between clients, servers, and associated tools. For software packages that make up the system being developed by the WorldForge project, please see the dependencies for this record.
hMUD is a classic Telnet MUD client that runs in major Web browsers (IE, Firefox, and Chrome). Internally it's a Flash client, but you do not interact directly with Flash; it just does a bridge between the HTML and the MUD server. For the user, it's just an HTML page using Javascript (like most Web sites). So it is largely accessible by modern computers. It works on any Telnet MUD, and it parses ANSI colors, transforming the output to HTML. It has basic features like command history, logging output in HTML (so that you can save a log with the same output currently in your screen), and other conveniences.
Crossfire is a multi-player graphical arcade and adventure game made for X. It has certain flavours from other games, especially Gauntlet and the rogue-like games (Nethack, Moria, Angband, and Ragnarok). Any number of players can move around in their own window, finding and using items and battling monsters. They can choose to cooperate or compete in the same world.
Phaos is a browser-based MMORPG. It features character creation, the ability to purchase/sell/drop potions, weapons and armor, traveling, inter-player chat, the ability to fight in the arena, explorable dungeons, an admin system, the ability to trade with other players, and the ability to fight other players. A download is available for people running Windows who do not have access to or do not want to set up a Web server.
TinyMUX is a text-based game server in the MUSH family. It is a platform that allows several thousand players to connect to a single text-driven environment, and interact with each other and with the environment (which is maintained in a database). The rich programming environment can be used to build almost anything, limited only by the developer's imagination.
The Interreality project is a collection of Open Source, Free Software projects based on the Virtual Object System (VOS) platform. The goal is to develop a free and open platform for multi-user 3D virtual reality games, applications, and interactive, collaborative 3D virtual spaces. VOS is a powerful and generic network object framework designed to support a variety of high-performance applications. It is the basis for Ter'Angreal, a general-purpose browser application for entering and participating in 3D worlds.
