ctrlxmms is a small Perl script designed to increase the useability of XMMS. With it, you can use most of the common GUI functions of XMMS from the CLI. You also have a few handy commands which are not available from the GUI. Together with lirc and a remote (eg. Anir Multimedia Magic), this is a wonderful tool.
empegify is a networkable system for creating MP3s. It is designed so that you can perform the ripping on one set of machines, the encoding on another, storing the data to a final machine. It features CDDB support and maintainable code. It also includes a simple Web interface for easy monitoring.
fillrio.sh is a standalone shell script that loads random MP3 files to all available memory in your rio. The RIO utility is required to interface with the RIO hardware. Special features of this tool include the ability to recursively scan your music archive directories, specify search strings and add to what's already loaded.
mpegrec (and wavrec, which is bundled with this program) provide direct-to-disk recording of wav and mp3 files from your sound card. 'lame' is required for mpegrec to encode audio on-the-fly to mp3. mpegrec is a simple, multithreaded (and multi-buffering) C application. It has been tested on a dual PII-450 running Linux Mandrake 7.0 with a Soundblaster PCI128 and works well capturing audio at 44.1kHz stereo directly to a 192kb mp3 file. The commandline interface is simple and allows recording for a specified number of seconds, or until Control-C is hit.
Mpserv is an architecture for playing MP3s distributed throughout a LAN or high-speed WAN. The core is the server which houses a database of song titles available through the network. Clients connect to this server and request songs to be played on the stereo connected to the server machine. The modular design allows for third party clients to be created with any interface. Included is a ripper/encoder for adding your music to the available database of titles. A sample client is also provided, written in perl/gtk.
php-stream is a front end for the stream-db icecast/shoutcast MP3 file streamer. php-stream uses the same database backend for queues and logs as stream-db. Users will be able to make their own playlists of songs, and the system playlists will be the complete set of songs that make up an individual album. Full access control will be provided, to set limits on the number of songs and playlists a user can submit to the system. The aim the project is to allow people to create their own streaming media stations, with users, requests, song histories, and playlists.
