Beets is a media library management system designed for obsessive-compulsive music geeks. It catalogs your collection, automatically improving its metadata as it goes using the MusicBrainz database. It also downloads cover art for albums it imports. Then it provides a bouquet of tools for manipulating and accessing your music. Beets also includes a music player that speaks the MPD protocol, so you can play music in your beets library using any MPD client.

MP3 Diags finds problems in MP3 files and helps the user fix many of them. It looks at both the audio part (VBR info, quality, normalization) and the tags containing track information (ID3). It has a tag editor, which can download album information (including cover art) from MusicBrainz and Discogs, as well as paste data from the clipboard. Track information can also be extracted from a file's name. Another component is the file renamer, which can rename files based on the fields in their ID3V2 tag (artist, track number, album, genre, etc.).
puddletag is a tag editor for Linux loosely based on mp3tag. It uses a table layout so that all the tags you want to edit by hand are visible and easily editable. puddletag excels at automating repetitive tasks like extracting tag information from filenames, tagging files from a text file or the clipboard, renaming or moving files and folders based on tags by using patterns, and manipulating tags using actions and regular expressions. Supported formats include id3v1, id3v2 (.mp3), AAC (.m4a), VorbisComments (.ogg, .flac), and APEv2 (.ape). Much of mp3tag's functionality has been replicated with added enhancements and tweaks.
MP3 Management can be used to build a catalog of MP3 files in a MySQL database. It can traverse a given directory to find MP3 files. For each MP3 file that is found, it extracts its ID3 tags, including album art, and adds an entry in a MySQL database. The class also extracts 20 second clips of each MP3 file and stores them in a subdirectory named clips. The duration of the clips is configurable. The class is intended to be used with the Id3 Tag Correction and Downloading script, which corrects id3 tags and downloads lyrics, artist biographies, and other information using Web services and other Web sites.
Flac2All is a multi-threaded script that will convert your collection of FLAC files into either Ogg Vorbis, MP3 (with the Lame encoder), or FLAC, complete with any tags and identical file/folder structure. The script has been stable for about a year now, and it has been known to saturate 8-core machines with parallel conversions. It is useful for people with with large FLAC collections who also want a lossy version for portable media players. If wanted, the script can perform updates by skipping already converted files. It has only been tested on Linux, but it should work without alteration on the other Unix systems with bash and the required dependencies.
audiopreview is a command-line tool that plays previews of many audio file types (Ogg, MP3, etc.), video file types (AVI, MPEG, Real, etc.), and Internet streams. It can also be used as a regular command-line media file player (i.e. play the files entirely like yauap or mpc123 would).
Nextls is a console application that keeps track of your music collection using a MySQL database to store information such as length, bitrate, metadata, and where on the hard drive it is located. When Nextls is launched, it will figure out any changes done since the previous run and update the database accordingly. The database is very simple to work with, and there also exists a sister project in Nx2 that will allow you to take your database online and stream your music from a Web browser.
