The WorldForge Project is developing a complete, distributable framework for massively multiplayer online roleplaying games. The system will include a number of fully developed roleplaying worlds with unique maps, histories, creatures and legends. To run these worlds on the servers a balanced but highly customisable set of roleplaying rules is being developed. Provisions will be made to allow others the ability to recode the servers to use alternate rule sets. A standard protocol named Atlas is being developed to allow a common communication layer between clients, servers, and associated tools. hfsutils is a comprehensive software package being developed to permit manipulation of HFS volumes from UNIX and other systems. HFS is the ``Hierarchical File System,'' the native volume format used on modern Macintosh computers. The software reads and writes HFS (but not HFS+) volumes with several command-line programs and optionally an X interface. The software can also be used as a C library.

Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver, maintained for more than 30 years. It saves many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore individual files from the archive. It includes command line interfaces for the "tar", "Sun-Tar", "cpio", "pax", and "gnutar" command-line syntax. It includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern matcher, multi-volume support, the ability to archive sparse files and ACLs, the ability to archive extended file flags, automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order recognition, automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives, and special features that allow star to be used for full and incremental backups. It includes the only known platform independent "rmt" server program.

The Extended Universal Resource Locator library provides a complete virtualization of file-like objects. How data is stored is completely transparent to the client, since the library is meant to replace java.io.File. It provides implementations for handling local files, Jar/Zip archives, and XML documents. (Implementations for CVS and FTP are available seperately.) Other storage providers can be written and plugged in. It also provides a merged filesystem implementation that allows multiple hierarchies to appear as one and to override each other in a controlled way. Other features include notification of changes to files, and support for attaching (dynamically updatable) actions to file objects.
