distributed.net is a loosely knit group of computer users from all of the world that is taking up challenges requiring lots of computing power (most notably the RC5, DES, and OGR cracking contests). It is simple to participate in the challenges by downloading and running their client software (which uses idle CPU time to complete its tasks).

Free Java is a development environment designed to help beginners write Java programs. Its editor includes syntax highlighting and an undo/redo function. It features a structure panel and a file browser. Compiling and running a program can be done with the push of a single button, and compiler errors are shown clearly. Frodo is a free, portable C64 emulator. It focuses on the exact reproduction of graphical effects possible on the C64, and comes in three "flavors" (Frodo, Frodo PC, and Frodo SC) with increasingly higher quality of emulation, but at the cost of higher processing power requirements. Frodo has been ported to a number of systems, including handheld computers. The Unix version can use either SDL, X11, or SVGAlib to display the graphics.

ZooLib allows one to write a single set of C++ sources which can be compiled into native executables for Mac OS, Windows, BeOS, or POSIX-compliant systems that use the X Window system (such as Linux). Zoolib provides a GUI toolkit with a uniquely flexible layout system. It also provides a single-file database format, TCP networking, and extensive debugging support. ZooLib applications are multithreaded. ZooLib requires only minimal support from the underlying OS and platform GUI layer, and thus could be ported to a completely new platform without too much difficulty. ZooLib is fully production quality on Windows and MacOS, completely implemented but untested on BeOS, and not yet complete on POSIX. Please note that the sources from the "demo" branch are also required to build ZooLib or to get started writing your own ZooLib applications.

CFL (Compressed File Library) is meant for the save-files used by games, and other sorts of data files. Its features include pluggable class factories, easy CFL file creation at runtime, and the ability to have multiple separate CFL objects in memory at the same time. The package also includes a CFL testing tool to make it easier to port the library and to create additional plug-in compressors, preprocessors, and ciphers. It also includes a makecfl utility, which makes it easy to create ini files.
