SMDB is a small, portable database library that exports an API similar that of GDBM and allows for the simple storage and retrieval of key/data couples. The library is totally system independent due to the use of externally supplied interface pointers. File locking is left to the caller, allowing single instance users to not pay the the price (in terms of performance and portability) of the locking framework. It supports transactions, multiple tables inside the same DB file, and is less than half the size of GDBM.

Bcfg2 helps system administrators produce a consistent, reproducible, and verifiable description of their environment, and offers visualization and reporting tools to aid in day-to-day administrative tasks. It is based on an operational model in which the specification can be used to validate and optionally change the state of clients, but in a feature unique to bcfg2 the client's response to the specification can also be used to assess the completeness of the specification. Using this feature, bcfg2 provides an objective measure of how good a job an administrator has done in specifying the configuration of client systems. Bcfg2 is therefore built to help administrators construct an accurate, comprehensive specification. Bcfg2 has been designed from the ground up to support gentle reconciliation between the specification and current client states. It is designed to gracefully cope with manual system modifications. Bcfg2 can also enable the construction of complex change management and deployment strategies.

downtimed is a program that monitors operating system downtime, uptime, shutdowns, and crashes and records such events. At OS startup it logs information about previous downtime. It then periodically updates a time stamp file on the disk, which is used to determine the approximate time when the system was last up and running. During a graceful system shutdown, it records a time stamp in another file. The downtimes(1) command line tool can be used to inspect records of past downtime.

Build systems fail to scale to large projects when rebuilding a small portion requires stat-ing every project file. Prebake is a build system that uses a long-lived service to hook into the file-system and watch for changes so it can avoid unnecessary I/O for incremental builds. It also solves common problems with Ant and Make: missing dependencies and build cruft from deleted source files. It does away with missing dependencies by doing away with explicit dependencies altogether. Build dependencies are inferred by intersecting globs; if one product takes *.c and produces *.o, and another takes *.o and produces *.lib, then the latter depends on the former. Prebake also gets the benefits of both a declarative build syntax (a la make) and the flexibility of hand coded shell scripts. It uses tightly sandboxed JavaScript and "mobile functions" to get the flexibility of a scripting language with the hard controls on side effects that allow for repeatable builds. In practice, the JS in build files looks declarative, like JSON, but the dynamism is there when you need it.

py-setproctitle is a library that allows a Python process to change its title, as displayed by system tools such as ps and top. Changing the title is useful in multi-process systems, for example when a master process is forked: changing the child's title allows you to identify the task each process is busy with. It is based on PostgreSQL's multi-platform implementation.
