Buildkernel is an intelligent shell script that automates the task of building a Linux kernel. For beginning users, it handles the process from beginning to end, prompting the user when they have to do something. Advanced users can use it to build multiple kernels with little effort. Buildkernel will download kernel and pcmcia source, remove unnecessary code, create symlinks, automatically patch the kernel, build the kernel, modules, and pcmcia modules (nicely), and install them to hard disk or floppy, running LILO as necessary.

Mercury is a new logic/functional programming language, which combines the clarity and expressiveness of declarative programming with advanced static analysis and error detection features. Its highly optimized execution algorithm delivers efficiency far in excess of existing logic programming systems, and close to conventional programming systems. Mercury addresses the problems of large-scale program development, allowing modularity, separate compilation, and numerous optimization/time trade-offs.

Heartbeat is a full-function high-availability system for Linux and other POSIX-like OSes. It monitors services and restarts them on errors. When managing a cluster (more than 1 machine), it will also monitor the members of the cluster and begin recovery of lost services in less than a second. It runs over serial ports and UDP broadcast/multicast, as well as OpenAIS multicast. It is easily adapted to different interconnect media and protocols. When used in a cluster, it can operate using shared disks, data replication, or no data sharing. Versions starting with 2.0 are comparable to any commercial HA package, providing resource monitoring, larger clusters, and detailed dependency information.

bpowerd is a daemon and makes proper use of the system log for error checking. It uses init's powerstatus calls to do it's dirty work, instead of calling shutdown itself. bpowerd is easy to compile and configure, using GNU's autoconf and providing explicit instructions for testing and installation. bpowerd was created using specs provided from the manufacturer, as opposed to reverse-engineering.

npadmin is a command line tool to administer network printers. It is based on the concepts of JetAdmin and other vendor's tools but is designed to be scriptable. It uses SNMP to query the common printer MIB (RFC 1759) and return information about the printer. There is a surprising amount of information available in the common printer MIB and since the vendors all use their private MIBs, this appears to be the only tool that makes it available.
