GenScriber is a transcription editor for census records, church records, birth, marriage ,baptisms, burials, index records, etc. Data can be entered in a spreadsheet grid, or a word processor text editor. Both types of input provide stable, non-volatile editors, designed for genealogical data input. All cell inputs are alphanumeric. No assumptions are made about the data type. WHDD is a HDD diagnostic and data recovery tool for Linux. It can test a hard drive with reads and writes, while providing intuitive visualization of the process. It also has a function for copying a device, with algorithms optimized for least harm to already-defective source devices. It works with your hard drives at a low level by sending ATA commands, which means that the system doesn't freeze while accessing damaged devices (the device is soft-reset on timeout).

Shasplit takes a large data block, splits it into smaller parts, and puts those parts into an SHA-based content-addressed store. Reassembling those parts is a trivial "cat" invocation. Repeating parts (e.g., from previous split operations) are stored only once, which allows efficient incremental backups of whole LVM snapshots via Rsync. Shasplit shows its strengths on encrypted block devices, but might be useful for non-encrypted data, too.
