prll is a utility for parallelizing the execution of shell functions. It provides a convenient interface for parallelizing the execution of a single task over multiple data files or any other kind of data that you can pass as a shell function argument. It is meant to make it simple to fully utilize a multicore/multiprocessor machine. prll is designed to be used not just in shell scripts, but also in interactive shells. To make the latter convenient, it is implemented as a shell function. Shells are not very good at automatic job management, so prll uses helper programs, written in C. To prevent race conditions, System V Message Queues are used to signal job completion. Standard output is buffered and Semaphores are used to prevent interleaving.

Newfangle is a literate programming technique for LyX (or LaTeX) inspired by notangle. It comes in two parts. The weave part that produces the formatted document is implemented entirely in LaTeX, and the tangle that generates the source code is implemented in awk for portability. Naturally, newfangle is written using literate programming techniques, using itself, and so the source is also the documentation. The source is written using the LyX document editor, an excellent front end to LaTeX. LyX is not required, but newfangle provides formatting support for LyX. Literate programming makes you write good code, because if you can't write a good justification or explanation for your code, it makes you think again and write something that you can explain.

Ejecter is a little tool that makes it possible to unmount external devices and eject CD-ROMs without having to right-click on the device icon (either on the desktop or in Nautilus). It sits in the background and shows an icon in the system tray when one or more peripherals are connected to your PC: once clicked, a window appears with the list of the devices (volume name and device type, and much clearer than the similar thing available on Windows) and the related eject button. Being written in Vala, it is translated into C code and then compiled. This means that it's lightweight and consumes little memory, does not require a full VM like Python, and has no strange requirements to run (just GLib/GTK).
