BlueJ is an interactive Java development environment. It provides a unique user interface that presents a graphical display of the application classes and their relationships, and it lets users interactively create objects of any class. Once objects have been created, users can interact with them directly. This interaction mechanism allows for much greater testing and experimentation than in conventional environments. BlueJ is suited for teaching and learning OO and Java.
BRL-CAD is a powerful constructive solid geometry solid modeling system that includes an interactive geometry editor, ray-tracing support for rendering and geometric analysis, path-tracing for realistic image synthesis, network distributed framebuffer support, and image and signal-processing tools.
Calc is arbitrary precision arithmetic system that uses a C-like language. It's useful as a calculator, an algorithm prototype, and as a mathematical research tool. More importantly, calc provides a machine-independent means of computation. Calc comes with a rich set of builtin mathematical and programmatic functions.
Hoard is a scalable memory allocator (malloc replacement) for multithreaded applications. Hoard can dramatically improve your application's performance on multicore machines. No changes to your source are necessary; just link it in. Hoard scales linearly up to at least 64 processors. Supported platforms include Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X, and Windows.
The Easysoft ODBC-ODBC Bridge allows applications on one machine to access ODBC data sources on another. It supports multiple concurrent connections from multiple clients to multiple target databases. The principle application is to enable access from Linux and Unix platforms to remote ODBC databases. For example, Apache/PHP programs on Linux can read/write data held on MS SQL Server on Windows, and Perl programs can read/write data held in a MS Access database. Supported applications include Applixware, Open Office, Python, Rexx/SQL, mnGoSearch, OpenLDAP, and Oracle sqlplus. Supported platforms include Linux, MacOSX, IBM zSeries, Windows and various Unix flavors.
Styx is a scanner/parser generator designed to address some shortcomings of the traditional lex/yacc combination. It has unique features like automatic derivation of depth grammar, production of the derivation tree, including it's C interface, preservation of full source information, pretty printing to faciliate source-source translation, and persistence to aid rapid interpreter writing. It also supports reentrancy. Styx works well under several different OSes, including serveral Unixes, DOS, and Windows.
travtrack is a tool to help a Traveller(tm) referee keep track of essential data for a game. Already implemented are galaxies, sectors, subsectors, systems, stars, planets, belt and moons. Yet to be implemented are trade routes, ships, characters, and all the rest. These will take some time, but should not be too complex. It currently uses the GURPS Traveller:First In rules for system generation, but a subproject is under way to add Classic Traveller generation and output. travlib is a collection of C routines that should make writing a Traveller application easier. A guile interface to the data representation functions is provided.
PhysicsFS is a library to provide abstract access to various archives. The programmer defines a "write directory" on the physical filesystem. No file writing done through the PhysicsFS API can leave that write directory, for security. For file reading, the programmer lists directories and archives that form a "search path". Once the search path is defined, it becomes a single, transparent, hierarchical filesystem. This makes for easy access to ZIP files in the same way as you access a file directly on the disk, and it makes it easy to ship a new archive that will override a previous archive on a per-file basis. Symbolic links can be disabled, for added safety. Finally, PhysicsFS gives you a platform- abstracted means to determine if CD-ROMs are available, the user's home directory, where in the real filesystem your program is running, etc.
