Bcfg2 helps system administrators produce a consistent, reproducible, and verifiable description of their environment, and offers visualization and reporting tools to aid in day-to-day administrative tasks. It is based on an operational model in which the specification can be used to validate and optionally change the state of clients, but in a feature unique to bcfg2 the client's response to the specification can also be used to assess the completeness of the specification. Using this feature, bcfg2 provides an objective measure of how good a job an administrator has done in specifying the configuration of client systems. Bcfg2 is therefore built to help administrators construct an accurate, comprehensive specification. Bcfg2 has been designed from the ground up to support gentle reconciliation between the specification and current client states. It is designed to gracefully cope with manual system modifications. Bcfg2 can also enable the construction of complex change management and deployment strategies.

It is a true hybrid, offering transaction support, data-versioned snapshots, and sophisticated function-based indices. Wildcards, phonetic, and fuzzy logic searches are supported, as well. BlackRay supports a subset of the SQL92 standard and provides JDBC/ODBC/native driver options via the PostgreSQL protocol, in addition to an API based query option. The project is released under the GPLv2, with some drivers available under BSD-style licenses. Commercial support contracts are available as well.

Crules is a dynamic programming language that takes influences from Python, Perl, and Haskell. The main motivation for this language was the concept or design of a new paradigm or feature called "rules". A rule is a potential entry point which has dependencies rather than parameters. Any rule can be overridden to have different or no dependencies. Since the language itself can decide on the best course of actions for an operation, dependencies become preconditions for execution. It also features lazy evaluation, object orientation, variadic and anonymous-parameter functions, and reflection. These features help make the language truly dynamic.
