The Advanced Linux Sound Architecture is composed of several parts. The first is a fully modularized sound driver which supports module autoloading, devfs, isapnp autoconfiguration, and gives complete access to analog audio, digital audio, control, mixer, synthesizer, DSP, MIDI, and timer components of audio hardware. It also includes a fully-featured kernel-level sequencer, a full compatibility layer for OSS/Free applications, an object-oriented C library which covers and enhances the ALSA kernel driver functionality for applications (client/server, plugins, PCM sharing/multiplexing, PCM metering, etc.), an interactive configuration program for the driver, and some simple utilities for basic management.
Ganglia is a scalable distributed monitoring system for high-performance computing systems such as clusters and grids. It is based on a hierarchical design targeted at federations of clusters. Ganglia is currently in use on over 500 clusters around the world and has scaled to handle clusters with 2000 nodes.
nexB OpenAssets is a tool for inventorying, managing, and monitoring applications, software, hardware, networks, and generally any IT asset. It is designed so that system administrators, IT, and finance can determine what they have, how it is configured, what it is used for, and how much it is being used, so that informed decisions can be made. It complements existing network management software, integrates with a growing number of protocols and tools, and features no-agent discovery and inventory, configuration management including dependencies and correlation, monitoring, and reporting. It makes extensive and innovative use of XML, Xpath, and Xquery.
Wackamole is a tool that helps with making a cluster highly available. It manages a bunch of virtual IPs that should be available to the outside world at all times, and ensures that exactly one machine within the cluster is listening on each virtual IP address that Wackamole manages. If it discovers that particular machines within the cluster are not alive, it will almost immediately ensure that other machines acquire the virtual IP addresses the down machines were managing. At no time will more than one connected machine be responsible for any virtual IP.
Hardened Debian improves Debian GNU/Linux with high security and hardening features, hardened kernels and packages, DHKP, and other security related enhancements. It makes systems more difficult to compromise using common attacks such as race conditions, chroot jail escapes, and buffer overflows.
CD-R/W discs can be written with a technique called packet or incremental writing. This allows transparent and buffer-underrun-free recording for CD recorders that support this method. No more mastering of .iso images; just mount your CD-ROM read/write and copy files directly to it.
digup is a console tool to update md5sum or shasum digest files. It will read existing digest files, check the current directory for new, updated, modified, renamed, or deleted files, and query the user with a summary of changes. After reviewing the updates, they can be written back to the digest file. This makes digup very useful to update and verify incremental archives like chronological data storages, which are commonly stored and backed up on hard disks. Using a full file digest scan, even slowly creeping bad blocks on old hard disks can be detected. By using a crontab entry, this check can be performed unattended and routinely.
System Local Audit Daemon can run standalone or managed by systems like IBM-Tivoli, HP-OpenView, or Nessus to perform local security checks. It runs on the target hosts and enables them to call security tools like John the Ripper, Tiger, Tripwire, or a virus scanner via a unified XML interface. It is part of the BOSS Project.
