JBIG-KIT implements a highly effective data compression algorithm for bi-level high-resolution images such as fax pages or scanned documents. It provides a portable C library of compression and decompression functions with a documented interface that can easily be included into image or document processing software. In addition, JBIG-KIT provides ready-to-use compression and decompression programs with a simple command line interface (similar to the converters found in netpbm). It implements the specification ISO 11544 and ITU-T T.82, which is commonly referred to as the "JBIG1 standard".
wad2svg takes a level file for the computer game Doom, and draws a 2D map of the level as an SVG (Scalable Vector Graphic) file. This can then be edited and/or converted to a raster image using a suitable vector graphics programs. wad2svg can also draw the node tree of a Doom level, and is designed to be extended to draw other aspects of the level.
Image Alchemy has the ability to convert between over 90 different raster image formats (including all colorspace and compression variations of each format). Color management features include gamma correction, undercolour removal, seven high quality dithers, colorspace conversion, and palette manipulation. It also includes a Postscript interpreter.
tif22pnm is a command line utility that converts between TIFF sampled images and PNM images (both directions), using the libtiff library, but not using NetPBM. tif22pnm is similar to the tifftopnm utility in the NetPBM distribution, but tif22pnm handles a wider range of TIFF files and is able to output the alpha channel as a PBM or PGM file. png22pnm, a converter from PNG to PNM, is also bundled into the distribution.
sam2p is a Unix commandline utility that converts many raster (bitmap) image formats into Adobe PostScript or PDF files. The images are not vectorized. It gives full control to the user to specify standards-compliance, compression, and bit depths. It is common that sam2p can compress an image down to an 50kB Level1 PostScript file without quality loss, while other popular converters produce multi-megabyte output. It provides some Level3 compression filters even on Level1 devices.
FreeImage is an Open Source library project for developers who would like to support popular graphics image formats in their software. The libraries are available in both binary and source distributions. FreeImage supports BMP, CUT, ICO, IFF, JBIG, JNG, JPEG, JFIF, KOALA, LBM, PCD, PBM, PGM, PNG, PPM, PSD, RAS, TARGA, TIFF, and WBMP.
"Jpegpixi" is short for "JPEG pixel interpolator". It is a command-line utility which interpolates pixels in JFIF images (commonly refered to as "JPEG images"). This is useful to correct images from a digital camera with CCD defects. Jpegpixi is unique in that it tries to preserve the quality of the JFIF image as much as possible. Most graphics programs decode JFIF images when they are loaded, and re-encode them when they are saved, which results in an overall loss of quality. Jpegpixi, on the other hand, does not decode and re-encode the image, but manipulates the encoded image data, protecting the quality of the image as much as possible.
