Kismet is an 802.11 layer 2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and intrusion detection system. It will work with any wireless card which supports raw monitoring (rfmon) mode, and can sniff 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g, and 802.11n traffic (device drivers permitting). It identifies networks by passively collecting packets and detecting standard named networks, detecting (and given time, decloaking) hidden networks, and inferring the presence of non-beaconing networks via data traffic.
Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a cross-platform Geographic Information System (GIS). It offers support for vector and raster formats, including spatially enabled tables in PostgreSQL using PostGIS, common GIS vector formats such as Shapefiles, and geo-referenced rasters (TIFF, PNG, and GEOTIFF). Many plugins are available to dynamically add new functionality. Viewing of GRASS layers (vector and raster) is provided by a plugin. GRASS vector layers can be edited in QGIS.
Engauge Digitizer is digitizing software that converts an image showing a graph or map into numbers. The image file can come from a scanner, digital camera, or screenshot. The numbers can be read on the screen, and written or copied to a spreadsheet. Highlights for beginners include an intuitive interface and extensive context-sensitive documentation. Elgaard Positioning System (EPS) is a moving map application for use with GPS (Global Positioning Systems). It can handle waipoints, routes, and tracks. It can import and export data and communicate with Garmin GPS units. It can use charts scanned from paper charts. A version for the Sharp Zaurus is available.
The OGR Simple Features Library is a C++ library providing read/write support for a variety of Geospatial (GIS) vector file formats including Shapefiles, Mapinfo MID/MIF and TAB, PostGIS, and Oracle Spatial. It attempts to follow an OpenGIS Simple Features geometry model, and use OpenGIS coordinate system standards. C and Python bindings are provided. It is a component of the GDAL project.
GeoServer is a software server that allows users to share and edit geospatial data. Designed for interoperability, it publishes data from any major spatial data source using open standards. GeoServer is the reference implementation of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Feature Service (WFS) and Web Coverage Service (WCS) standards, as well as a high performance certified compliant Web Map Service (WMS). GeoServer forms a core component of the Geospatial Web.
Wifimap is a Web-based application that graphically documents the organisation and growth of a wireless network community. The map is composed of numerous square cells that are recombined to display the required area. Users can start with just a few cells to cover their area, and can access different areas of the network by scrolling through the cells. New cells can be easily added using a built in editor. Cells can be added at different zoom levels allowing users to zoom in and out of the map. The design makes it very fast, and it can be run on low powered servers. Wireless nodes can be added or edited with a few mouse clicks. Links between the nodes are automatically drawn based on the data entered for each node, and colours are used to represent different wireless protocols.
