Sshguard monitors services through their logging activity. It reacts to messages about dangerous activity by blocking the source address with the local firewall. Sshguard employs a clever parser that can transparently recognize several logging formats at once (syslog, syslog-ng, metalog, multilog, raw messages), and detects attacks for many services out of the box, including SSH, several ftpds, and dovecot. It can operate all the major firewalling systems, and features support for IPv6, whitelisting, suspension, and log message authentication.
Dante is a free implementation of the proxy protocols SOCKS version 4 and SOCKS version 5 (RFC 1928). It can be used as a firewall between networks, controlling outgoing traffic. The package consists of two parts: a socks server and a proxy client that supports socks, HTTP proxies, and UPnP. RFC 1961 (GSSAPI) is supported in both the client and the server. Commercial support is available.
HTTPTunnel is a simple client/server application for creating an HTTP tunnel between two machines, optionally via a Web proxy. This tunnel can then be used to wrap arbitrary TCP socket traffic in HTTP, thus allowing communications even through a restrictive firewall that only allows outgoing HTTP connections.
ClarkConnect is a powerful yet easy-to-use server/gateway software solution designed for the small/medium-sized organization. The software provides all the necessary server tools to run an organization: email, antivirus, antispam, file sharing, groupware, VPN, firewall, intrusion detection/prevention, content filtering, bandwidth management, multi-WAN and more.
LFT (Layer Four Traceroute) is a sort of "traceroute" that often works much faster than the commonly-used Van Jacobson method and goes through many configurations of packet-filter based firewalls. More importantly, LFT implements numerous other features, including TCP, UDP, or ICMP-based traces, AS number lookups through several reliable sources, loose source routing, netblock name lookups, and more. LFT also distinguishes between layer-4 protocols, which make its statistics slightly more realistic, and gives a savvy user the ability to trace protocol routes, not just layer-3 hops.
AMaViS (A Mail Virus Scanner) scans e-mail attachments for viruses using third-party virus scanners available for UNIX environments. It resides on a UNIX (Linux) machine and looks through the attached files arriving via e-mail, generates reports when a virus is found and sets the delivery on hold.
IPTables-tutorial is a tutorial which explains how to install and set up iptables and netfilters on Linux. It takes you through a usable example file step by step, and helps you understand its basic functionality. The tutorial currently contains 6 different example scripts that may be used freely under GPL licensing terms.
m0n0wall is an all-in-one firewall software package that is based on FreeBSD. It is geared towards embedded PCs, but it also works on standard PCs. It includes an easy-to-use Web interface like commercial firewall boxes do. PHP is used instead of shell scripts, and the entire system configuration is stored in a single XML-formatted file. There is support for VPN, traffic shaping, captive portal, VLANs, and more.
SmoothWall Express is a network firewall, designed with home and small business users in mind. It is based upon a security-hardened subset of the GNU/Linux operating system and is completely free to use, download, and distribute. SmoothWall Express offers facilities and features normally only seen in expensive commercial offerings.
