Bonnie++ is based on the Bonnie hard drive benchmark by Tim Bray. The most notable features that have been added are support for >2G of storage and testing operations involving thousands of files in a directory. This program is used by ReiserFS developers, but can be useful for anyone who wants to know how fast their hard drive or file system is. It now includes ZCAV in the package. This program tests the performance of different zones on the hard drive. ZCAV has been released separately before but will now only be released as part of the Bonnie++ suite.
fam++ is a C++ wrapper for fam, which uses imon or DNotify (Linux 2.4.x) to inform it when inodes change (the net effect being that applications can register interest in a file, and have events send to the application when the file changes). Fam++ also integrates with gdk and Loki to make creation of C++ GTK+/GNOME apps simpler.
mmounter tries to mimic the behaviour of MacOS with regards to automatic monitoring and mounting of the volumes in your system (CDs, ZIP disks, floppies, HDs) using their volume name as the mount point. It will optionally eject devices and let users mount/umount them. Currently mmounter supports ext2, ext3, iso9660 (CD), HFS, and VFAT. This tool is user-space only (doesn't require any kernel patching) and should be fairly portable.
Partition Image is a Linux/UNIX utility similar to Symantec's Ghost. This uility saves partitions in the EXT2, Reiserfs, NTFS, HPFS, FAT16, and FAT32 file system formats to an image file. The image file can be compressed with gzip or bzip2 in order to save disk space, and it can be split in order to fit onto a series of floppy disks. This program can be useful for backup purposes. A boot/root disk is also provided, allowing you to run Partition Image without Linux installed on the hard disk.
xdiskusage is a user-friendly program to show you what is using up all your disk space. It is based on the design of the "xdu" program written by Phillip C. Dykstra. Changes have been made so it runs "du" for you, and can display the free space left on the disk, and produce a PostScript version of the display.
libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using C++ IOStreams and metadata is available as key-value pairs through the Extended Attributes (EA) interface. Rich support for filesystem indexing is included to provide timely search results for well into millions of files. Ferris uses a plugin API to handle a large range of data sources, metadata, and index and search strategies. Filesystems include file:// with monitoring, XML (mount an XML file as a filesystem), relational databases, ISAM databases (Berkeley db, tdb, gdbm, eet et al), xmldb, LDAP, Applications (Evolution, Firefox, Emacs), HTTP, FTP, sockets, and RDF (from XML, binary, soprano). EA generators include image, audio, and animation decoders.
Panasync Tools provides a set of commands that enables version tracking among plain file copies. Retaining the basic functionality of standard copy commands, one can always track if a file has seen more updates than another file, and determine redundant or equivalent file copies. The approach is totally decentralized and serverless, and the functionality is achieved by small command-line user level programs that manipulate (by duplicating, comparing, joining and moving) any given file. By copying files with these commands users can detect if those files forgotten on disks or dispersed on different file systems and computers hold obsolete versions, and can thus be deleted, or need to be merged when depicting parallel updates. The updates, themselves can be done by any application since the system keeps a digest of the files to detect changes.
