mod_cband is an Apache 2 module that solves the problem of limiting the bandwidth usage of users, virtual hosts, and destinations. When the configured transfer limit is exceeded, mod_cband will redirect all further requests to a location specified in the configuration file. The module can also limit download speeds and maximal requests per second for virtualhosts, users, and remote clients.
NASLite is a Network Attached Storage (NAS) server operating system designed to transform a basic computer into a dedicated file server. Utilizing highly optimized versions of Samba, uCLibc, BusyBox, and various other Linux tools, it provides SMB/CIFS, FTP, or NFS filesystem support. It accommodates multiple client OSes: Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. NASLite offers SMART disk monitoring and large file support, and is incredibly easy to install and administer.
phpShare is a file browser written in PHP4. It allows you to provide a good looking and easily customized interface for browsing, uploading, and managing files via a Web interface. It is primarily aimed at allowing you to add an upload/download feature to a Web page, but can be limited to use by webmasters for managing the Website. It is easily installed and configured, and should work with any PHP-compatible Web server.
scponly is an alternative "shell" of sorts for system administrators who would like to provide access to remote users to both read and write local files without providing any remote execution priviledges. Functionally, it is a wrapper around the ssh suite of applications. It is typically used by creating a user whose shell is set to scponly. This user can neither login interactively nor execute commands remotely, but it can use scp and sftp to download and upload files to the computer, governed by the usual Unix file permissions.
ClusterNFS is a set of patches for the "Universal NFS Daemon" (UNFSD) to allow multiple clients to nfs mount the same root filesystem by providing "tagged" filenames. When a client requests the file "/path/filename", the ClusterNFS server checks for the existence of files of the form "/path/filename$$TAG=value$$". If such a file exists and the client has a matching value for KEY, this file is returned. If the client does not have a matching value or no such file exists, the file request proceeds as normal. Currently supported keys include HOST (hostname), IP (IP number), CLIENT (matches any nfs client) and CREATE (for "tagged" creation of files).
UDPCast allows to send data simultaneously to many destinations on a local net. This can for instance be used to install entire classrooms of PCs at once. The advantage over using other methods (nfs, ftp, whatever) is that udpcast uses Ethernet's multicast abilities: it won't take longer to install 15 machines than it would to install 2. The tool comes with a busybox bootdisk for easy loading of the tool. However, udpcast can also be started from the command line of an already installed system, and can be used for other purposes than just system installation.
