GCompris is an educational software suite with numerous activities for children aged 2 to 10. Some of the activities are game-orientated, but nonetheless still educational. These include computer discovery (keyboard, mouse, different mouse gestures), algebra (table memory, enumeration, double entry table, mirror image), science (the canal lock, the water cycle, the submarine, electric simulation), geography (place the country on the map), games (chess, memory, connect 4, oware, sudoku), reading practice, and others (learn to tell time, puzzles of famous paintings, vector drawing, cartoon making, etc.). It currently offers in excess of 100 activities, and more are being developed.
Genius is an arbitrary precision integer and multiple precision floating point calculator. It includes its own programming language similar in some aspects to C, bc, or Pascal. It can deal with rational numbers and complex numbers. It has matrix support as well. It uses the gmp library so it is very fast for calculations of large numbers. It has a command line and a GNOME interface. The GNOME interface supports plotting functions and 3D surfaces.
Squeak is an OpenSource and super-portable implementation of a multi-media capable Smalltalk-80 based object-oriented programming environment. It is written entirely in Smalltalk and has a high-performance VM, created by compiling the Smalltalk VM code into efficient and portable C code. It now uses the Self language's Morphic User Interface but still provides the original MVC GUI as well.
WIMS (WWW Interactive Mathematics Server) is a CGI Web application designed to host interactive mathematical educational activities such as exercises, computational math, and graphing tools. It features automatic score processing with strong anti-cheating mechanisms, virtual classes allowing teachers to guide/control student works, online exercise creation, animated graphics, a message board allowing inline mathematical formulas, and more. It can also be easily used for education within other disciplines.
McStas is a computer program (written in C) that enables you to model very precisely a neutron instrument described as a series of various components. A source component shoots each neutron randomly (Monte-Carlo), and the particle is then propagated through the different instrument components. These later act on the neutron characteristics (position, speed, direction, spin, etc.). Usually, one installs some detectors along the neutron path to monitor its characteristics and flux.
The GOBLIN project consists of a C++ class library for a large series of graph optimization problems, GOSH, an extension of the Tcl/Tk scripting language to graph objects, and GOBLET, a graphical user interface to the library functions. GOBLET includes a graph editor and supports the standard graph layout methods.
Planets is a fun, interactive program for many-body gravity simulations. The emphasis is on play: it's easy to add in planets, zoom in and out, change the physical constants, save and load configurations, etc. It's designed to be easy enough for a kid to enjoy, but that hardly precludes adults.
Spotter is software that can check students' answers to symbolic and numerical problems in math and science. It recognizes an answer regardless of the form it's in, and the instructor can put in helpful hints as responses to frequently-occurring mistakes. Symbolic answers can be input in a notation closely resembling normal human math notation (e.g., xy rather than x*y, and sin x instead of sin(x)). Spotter runs as a Perl CGI application on a Web server; the student doesn't need to install any software.
The Chemistry Development Kit (CDK) is a library of Java classes for chemo-, bioinformatics, computational chemistry, and chemometrics. It provides important algorithms like substructure search, SMILES, Gasteiger charges, QSAR descriptor calculation, 3D structure generation, 2D layout and rendering, many IO formats, atom typing, and more.
Translation is a Web-based language teacher's tool. It allows you to add sentences and their correct translations to a database via a browser, choose from the database which sentences to 'serve' to a group or an individual student, give a header and a footer text to the prepared translation and activate it for use, and add students to the database. The students can browse to their part of Translation, log in, and do their excercise. When students have completed their task, a message is sent to them and their teacher containing the original sentences and the correct translation by the teacher and the pupil's version. The Administrator of Tranlation can add teachers to the database and modify the language.php file to the desired language, visible in the browser by everyone. It has language support for Dutch, English, German, Greek, Finnish, French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and Turkish.
